The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

"I’m just as galled as I imagine many of you are to see mainstream news outlets rediscover their awesome power to set the national agenda, only to subject us to a rehash of the biggest story of 2024—Joe Biden is very old—in order to help their colleagues sell books."
Generally speaking the goal shouldn’t be for elected representatives to be ideological free agents, but to have real, sincere views on issues and the news and things that happened in the past. That’ll serve them way better when they inevitably face questions in uncontrolled environments.

Completely agree about how @wired has distinguished itself, for a long time but especially this past year.

Can't help but contrast what they have dug into with what was celebrated, eg, at WHCA dinner a week ago.

Something I have found @wired.com that makes them stick out--& this is similar to @talkingpointsmemo.com--is they don't give in to herd mentality on what is interesting. Many others just base what they're covering on what's been trending on social media. @wired.com covers stories outside the bubble

This is *exactly* step one of the same strategy Russia and Hungary used to criminalize dissent.

After that, they began to label nonprofit and political organizations as foreign agents, then started to restrict and ban on that basis.

Ukraine is not, as the Russian ambassador said, a "project."
Its statehood is older than Muscovy’s.
It has been a member of the US longer than Russia.
It has a language, an identity and its own aspirations.

"Those are real facts on the ground"?! This is pure Russian propaganda. No-one had talked seriously about Ukraine joining NATO - & even if they had, that would not have given Russia justification to invade. Disgusting.
