This also extends to Latinos. I have often spoke about why so many liberal instituons seem to have bent the knee to Trump, and one reason is that they wanted to police black/brown/queer peoples from getting too 'uppity'. Spending time in rich, Democratic, 'liberal' areas, you learn to identify...
It’s not just the admin, is the thing. It’s the media and political class and even many Democrats. The reason I know this is that Musk and MAGA have been pushing shocking anti-black scientific racism for years and the reaction has been, at most, a shrug - as if it’s just another point of view.
cool that the official position of the administration appears to be that black people don’t really count as americans

I wrote much of this several months ago, about Ezra Klein's response to the Kirk assassination, and then never ended up publishing it, but I think this UO "controversy" is a such a perfect example of how TPUSA et al actually advance conservative power that I decided to revive and rewrite it.
What Liberals Can Learn from Charlie Kirk
Over the last few days, if you’re active on political media, you have probably seen references to the “controversy” over a student’s failing grade on an essay at Oklahoma Un…

Let's do Reconstruction right.
"Western civilization," the font, the 11 stars - 11 states in the confederacy, for the record.

Why is this never news? Why are we letting our government agencies do this sort of thing while the news agencies report on hallucinated trade deals and act like everything is normal

The Nazism of Twitter the last few days has gotten crazy.

The right in this country wants a mass campaign of ethnic cleansing and open genocide if they can.

The turn against standardized testing is actually pretty bi-partisan! You can find red-state legislators arguing about how terrible it is (and how not career preparatory it is) and blue-state legislators talking about how it isn't equitable.

Parent groups have also agitated against it.

This is a sort of annoying posture by Kerr doing the 'I'm just a small bean" routine.

Again, the rhetorical trick here is pivoting to the corporations. The players get 50% of the revenue! Fewer games would mean substantially less money for them too

How many players would agree to a 10% pay cut?
Steve Kerr argues the NBA should reduce the number of games to address injuries, but says that’s unlikely to happen because this country prioritizes profit over everything else, including human decency and product quality. Hard to argue with that! www.nytimes.com/athletic/681...

Here's the reality. Simon, like a lot of the NY Times class (I'd say precocious 'thinker/writer from HYP' is a shared class) really finds social lefties really really obnoxious (which, they can be on colege campuses) and has grown up with 'liberals' as the institutions they fight against.
this is just a wild thing to tweet a week after democrats won a statewide in Georgia by 20 points. completely divorced from the current electoral environment

I was pretty anti-Pete for lots of reasons (and mostly, because I knew too many people like him in college and they sucked). It's also the case that Pete clearly thinks of the gay community as the cis white rich gays who are 'successful' but not 'that gay.

I don't see him representing my gay world
Buttigieg largely interpreted the queer left's rejection of him in the 2020 primary as a rejection of his identity as a gay white man--i.e. he wasn't "queer enough" or "oppressed enough" to represent queer people--when queer people as a population are just to his left politically
This is a straightforward Republican attack line, what the fuck is he doing

it's often very hard for extremely successful and powerful people to understand that mild criticism from those they have power over is not equivalent to actually being oppressed.
Jill Lepore in the Chronicle. This is still so embarrassing. I don't know in what world 2014 was "miserable" because students held the power over Harvard profs, and it was worse then than now.

I agree with this. That said, there is a tension in that folks at the top of the socioeconomic ladder fighting to take advantage of every tool in their status competition against each other.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

We went a couple of weeks where the government was de facto, but totally unconstitutionally, run by a triumvirate of the VP, speaker of the House, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and we all just shrugged and muddled through and then pretended it hadn't happened.
one reason I think soft coup is underrated as an outcome is that we probably already had one in January 2021 and the collective popular reaction was that we didn’t notice

A lot of people have observed that the Democrats’ deep unpopularity comes from the fact that absolutely everyone wants to complain about them and nobody wants to defend them.

This is true, but a lot of THAT dynamic comes from the fact that Dems are regularly punching their supporters in the face!
