This is a more generalized statement of something I am constantly reminding people of in political discourse, particularly surrounding the supposed "incompetence" of the Democrat Party
Teleological thinking, goal based thinking, is just thinking that has a means and an end.
The means don't have to be correct, or make sense, or work.
If you want it to rain, sacrifice a goat. If you want a pizza for dinner, do all these things in the recipe first. Etc.

They had to be, because they were paving a new path and that is not possible without studying paths that have already been trodden. Modern tech-bros are mere iterators *at best*, and more often than not they are merely investors totally uninvolved with actual tech and largely ignorant of it.
This is absolutely the case. Tech Guys of previous generations, to the extent that that category can be read back into the 19th and 20th centuries, were shockingly well-read by modern standards
it’s also notable how the techbros of today really don’t read *books* anymore - this was really not the case for the Tech Guys of earlier generations, far as I’ve been able to tell
