Indie publishers and vtuber corps have a lot in common, including a lot of short-term, unsustainable growth that happened during the COVID years when everyone had infinite free time which is now being corrected, in market terms

It's kind of funny how that works, but tbh the endings of those games are usually and by explicit design the least interesting parts of them

TL;DR, design as product engineering and design as artistic analysis have been conflated for video games from the start, and almost all written, formal game design theory is really the former, which is why game designers interested in artistic expression all hate it

Now, soliciting attention is still necessary, if you ever want to have any attention to reward!! But, when the natural and unavoidable tension between these two functions becomes as unbalanced as it now has in US corporate film and game production, it becomes an existential problem for the media

It also destroys communities economically; with the sole exception of Beijing which is too smartly run to allow itself to be scammed, every city that has hosted the Olympics has taken over a decade to recover economically from the losses

Eh, at this point I'm not even sure how it would help anyone for mainstream society to consider games art. It might even make things worse - spoiling the few pure parts of the medium left without in any way elevating the ocean of slop

attention but rather to *reward* it, to enrich those seeking something to experience rather than distract everyone else, which is the job of advertisement

For one thing, a market study posing as game design theory will always emphasize appealing first and foremost to the people with the least interest in your game, because they are the ones who still need to be convinced to buy it. But this is antithetical to the basic function of art not to solicit

that the music being written was bringing in as much support as possible from the patrons with the fattest wallets. It's replacing a study of aesthetics and inter-systemic interactions with a market study, without ever telling anyone about the substitution.

Now, that may be a fine thing in itself and something worth having, but it's an entirely different thing from game design; it's as if the people who wrote music theory during the development of that art form were not the ones either writing or appreciating the music, but the ones making sure

And the reason I say "friction and engagement are the same thing in games" instantly becomes clear if you replace the word "having" in the above post with "getting".

Having to walk around with your avatar and manually place objects around your farmb rather than do it via a menu in games like Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley is friction

Yeah, and also "friction" means more than just difficulty or frustration. Friction is any resistance the game puts up to your engagement with it at all, it is the sense of solidity that makes engaging with a game feel like engaging with a material object rather than a concept

The only thing I will urge is: do not give them more than one chance. If they betray you one time they will never do anything but betray you, and your faith is a joke to them, something to snicker over while they count the money your credulity has earned them.
