I remember someone once scolding me that advocating for cats to be indoor-only is “classist” because not everyone can afford toys to keep them entertained inside. I was like madam their favorite things are sticks, crinkly paper, and cardboard boxes. Literal garbage.

I could still tell you my home number and the numbers of my best friend and of the family across the street.

It help that they all had the same area code and because they were all in the same semi-rural area, they also started with the same 3 digits, so I only had to remember the last 4 digits.

A: Sigh. B: I feel like most of us had maybe 10 numbers memorized - our closest family and friends. Everyone else you kept written down somewhere. The thing is, if you wanted to communicate with the people you cared about most, you had to call them. So yeah, you remembered those specific numbers.

The trailblazing transgender rights activist Miss Major has passed away at the age of 78.

Miss Major was a lifelong organizer and participant in the ballroom scene. She took part in the 1969 Stonewall Riots and was injured by the police — but she kept fighting.

“Sauve qui peut”. This is a French phrase that translates literally to something like "save yourself who's able/can" and roughly equates to “run for your life!” or “every man for himself!”, indicating a chaotic or dangerous situation/stampede. Postcard from my collection, no date/info.

Also, Hawaii is beautiful but I don't know anyone here I'm not related to and I'm not good at spontaneously making new friends/acquaintances.

Although at least while I'm in Hilo I'm less isolated than I would be in the small community my mom and sister live in.

I'm back at my hotel room for the night. I had great plans to go to the public beach next door and at least dip my feet in the water, but I'm too tired to actually move that far. Mostly tired in brain rather than body. I'm carrying a lot of mental load right now.

My mother is in the hospital with congestive heart failure and swollen legs from retaining water, and the main thing she's worried about is that she's eating too much and is going to gain weight.

#diet culture is a hell of an insidious thing.
