I don’t know what might be going on, but my best wishes for you, no matter what it is.

Here’s a photo of the five street toughs who were hanging around the neighborhood where I’m staying…
A photo of a street in a residential neighborhood. Two houses — and the street in front of them — are in the shot. But what is most noticeable is that there are five cats on the street, sidewalk, and driveways.
Visiting family in Sacramento, staying at an AirBnB. Had breakfast with one of my oldest friends. May get a chance to work on editing a joint paper after the big family lunch gathering today.
A balding white man with wire-frame glasses and a grey mustache holds up a large yellow coffee mug with a leaf design on it. In the background is a tree-lined residential street.

Today we celebrate all who are coming out—sharing your truth, living it out loud, or still finding the right moment. Coming out takes courage, honesty, and hope. However your journey unfolds, you are loved and held in community.

Graphic celebrating National Coming Out Day. The background is divided diagonally: the top left triangle is bright red, and the bottom right is purple. A large rainbow band extends from the bottom left corner toward the upper right, displaying red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple stripes. In the upper left, bold white text reads “HAPPY NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY!” On the purple side, white text reads: “To those coming out today, or still finding the right moment—you are brave, loved, and never alone.” Several small rainbow-colored hearts float near the text. The UUA flaming chalice logo with rainbow colors appears at the bottom left corner, with “http://UUA.ORG ” written vertically along the blue stripe.
“Though the cause of Evil prosper,
Yet ’tis Truth alone is strong;
Though her portion be the scaffold,
And upon the throne be Wrong,—
Yet that scaffold sways the future,
And, behind the dim unknown,
Standeth God within the Shadow,
Keeping watch above his own!”
The hymn “Once to Every Soul and Nation,” adapted from James Russell Lowell’s 1845 poem “The Present Crisis,” captures this. One of the verses:
I’ve become very attached to it!

Rational points on curves over finite fields | Société Mathématique de France

(Here’s a statement of the bound. Note that it involves finding the solution 𝜑 to a trigonometric equation.)
A statement of the Oesterlé bound on the number of points on a curve of genus g over a finite field. The statement is complicated, and involves computing trigonometric functions applied to a the root of an equation that also involves trig functions.
This is making me feel smug that 15 years ago, when I wanted to implement a method for computing the Oesterlé bound for the number of points on a genus-g curve over 𝐅_q, I developed an algorithm to do so that uses only rational arithmetic. I didn’t trust floating point computations.
What percentage were complaints about your team insulting your user base? That’s certainly one way to increase the count!
we hit 2 billion posts today! 🥳
Was on a retreat for the first part of the week, so I had lots of things to do in the past few days to catch up.

This is in my home office. Painted so that the walls match a lot of the books on my shelves.
A balding white man with glasses and a grey mustache smiles while holding a coffee mug (decorated with a kookaburra) near his face. Behind him are bookshelves and an out-of-focus black and white print, hanging on a wall painted Springer yellow.

US farmers are saying they "just need temporary help, until things get better."

Here's the thing. US farm exports- which are mostly soy- CANNOT get better.

Other countries expanded their soy industries to fill China's demand.

We've walled ourselves out of the global market, folks. This is it.
I just bought a Remarkable Pro, primarily for reading from while giving sermons (not your use case!), but I have also used it to annotate papers I am refereeing and do light edits on. The writing experience is 10000x better than writing on an iPad with an Apple Pencil, IMO.
Probably no time for math today :( but at least I had my coffee from this mug.
A balding white man with black wire rim glasses and a gray mustache is standing in front of a window with plants outside, holding a coffee mug. The mug has an image on it that looks like an oval next to a large left open parenthesis. The text above the images says “Esto no es una curva elíptica,” and beneath the image it says “28–31 Octubre.”
I should have invested in a bottle of The Macallan.
A grocery store shelf tag for bottles of The Macallan 30-year-old single malt Scotch, showing a price of $5499.99 for a 750 ml bottle. But the price per bottle if you are a member and buy six of them is only $4949.99!

Military service is about courage and sacrifice. That’s what my father, a Marine, and my mother, a Navy veteran, taught me.

But awarding medals for the massacre at Wounded Knee is cruelty, not honor. And reaffirming them today only deepens the injustice. (1/2🧵)
Sir! The “Guide to Musical Theatre” web site begs to disagree!
Synopsis:
This exuberant musical, with a delightful score, conjures up the timeless dream world of work shy, beer-swilling Andy Capp, known the world over from Reg Smythe’s cartoon strip in the Daily Mirror
I think I had heard rumors, but I had never sought out a recording!
