people genuinely believe that LLMs are magical dice towers that just happen to spit out fully formed sentences.

you could try and explain that they're complex layers of compact state space reps written on high-dimensional surfaces and that real meaning and logic is encoded on them

LLMs do not, and I can't stress this enough, "return answers statistically." they are also not "guessing."

they return a function approximation.

a function that encodes rules, logic, facts, ideas, math, etc. notably, it is *highly* compressed and *extremely* lossy.

one of the absolute worst things about spending in this field is having to read everyone's cargo cult analysis of "how it works."

it's like reading over and over again that the reason there is life in the ocean is because water is a liquid.

LLMs are doubly deceptive. Most people think that they can ask it a question and get an answer. The majority of the rest think that you can ask an LLM a question and it will return what an answer might look like, statistically.

But it's actually even worse. It doesn't "read" the prompt; it guesses.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.

On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.
