This is the wonderful cover by @carlydraws.bsky.social for the October issue of The Deadlands @thedeadlands.com—for which I had the great pleasure of being the fiction guest editor!—with stories by Malena Salazar Maciá, Testimony Odey, Erin Ulm, Laila Amado, Jason Pearce, Kat Sedia, and Scott Payne
The cover of The Deadlands Issue 40, Fall 2025. Subtitled "a journal of ends and beginnings". Author names on the cover are Maciá, Biscotti, Odey, Ross, Ulm, Wollin, Amado, Pearce, Lemberg, Sedia, Romano, and Payne. The cover art shows a fractured red sky, maze-like with golden fissures, surrounds a golden skull at the top of a long, golden path awaiting a lone figure.

Just randomly found this picture from 2016 and I still regret not buying it. I would’ve gotten so much use out of this thing by now!

I’m teaching about miasma and binary gender in mandatory dresses. I lost a lot of weight by selling most of my organs. My university is Spirit Halloween from August to October. The year is 2026.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

When I got a kids meal at McDonald's they asked if I wanted a boy or girl toy so I said boy toy and they brought out a leashed Femboy in a maid outfit.

just finished Cancer Eats the Heart, a horror novel by Paul Jessup. Articulate prose style, highly engaging story enlivened (en-undeadened??) with delicious backstory and emotionally resonant themes. A lot of experience and feeling was poured into this work; it felt relatable and poignant.
