“It is not acceptable to recruit a variety of students into the laboratory, subject them to a variety of stress tests and abuses, and then keep the students who thrive under abuse and get rid of the students who aren't able to thrive in the lab. That's straight-up exploitation.”

👏👏👏
You know those labs that keep harming students, again and again? Some reflections on why it's so hard to stop this from happening and where our responsibilities lie.

The Trump admin submitted a sworn declaration under oath that Costa Rica had changed its mind and would no longer take Mr. Abrego.

Costa Rica has now said publicly that that this is false, that they have not changed their position at all, and that they will still take him.
Unpacked:
In Aug., Govt said if Abrego pled guilty he could go to Costa Rica, where he's okay with going. Abrego said no to plea. Govt now wants to send him to Liberia. Why not Costa Rica? Govt told judge Thurs that Costa Rica wouldn’t take him anymore. @mariasacchetti exposed them.
Costa Rica will accept Abrego, per @washingtonpost.com .
If true, DOJ, DHS, and Dept of State caused lies to be disseminated to Judge Xinis all day Thursday, where an ICE official testified about info sent him by Dept of State, claiming Costa Rica wouldn't take Abrego.

The alleged Kirk murderer isn't even left-wing! He's a terminally online white Mormon kid grown up in right-wing gun culture!
The vice president and other prominent Republicans keep insisting that all people left of center are somehow responsible for an individual assassin, and that seems not great?
JD Vance: "Don't let the debates we're having internally blind us to the fact that we're up against a radical leftist movement that murdered my friend a couple of months ago ... that is the real opponent here ... focus on the enemy."

What additional briefing is necessary?

The indictment was never presented to the grand jury. There's no true bill. Dismiss the charges.
Breaking: In DOJ Paperwork Snafu, James Comey May Never Have Been Properly Indicted

Just out of court, where judge established that second operative two-count indictment of Comey was never presented to or voted on by the grand jury.

Judge wanted immediate additional briefing on that issue.
November 19, 2025 at 5:05 PM
I mean, the judge is gonna just dismiss by end of day then right? If the charges filed weren't voted out by the grand jury then there's no true bill.
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Exactly how many times can Witkoff re-heat the exact same DOA maximalist demands from Putin and think they can just strongarm Zelensky into surrendering? Will the 12th time be the charm?
New: I can confirm hasty US-Russia proposal being pushed to Ukrainians via Dmitriev-Witkoff to Umerov. It would amount to Ukraine’s capitulation, with people familiar saying it’s Kremlin’s maximalist demands.
-Ukraine army cut 1/2
-Give up certain weapons
-Give up Donbas
-Zelensky displeased

The only way we get out from under gerrymandering is to make the consequences of political gerrymandering so painful for Republicans that they agree to ban it at the national level.

Democrats need to internalize that the only stimulus Republican pols and voters respond to is pain.
I don’t care what happens with the Texas legislative maps. Democrats should still gerrymander the shit out of blue states.

Can confirm the job centers in the suburbs thing. I'm in a big pharma biotech lab-based role so I get maybe one day a week working from home, 4-5 days onsite. Our lab sites are all located in the suburbs, and I live downtown in a major I95 city doing at 40 min reverse commute.
Downtowns still have lots of jobs, but the share is declining, and has collapsed after COVID and the advent of remote work. Job centers are often now located in the suburbs, or jobs are simply diffuse. That’s made the choice between “space or centrality” much easier over time.
People want arbitrarily large amounts of space and also a short and easy commute to a world-class downtown.

We were *temporarily* able to have our cake and eat it too by rolling out crazy new transportation technology.

That rollout is pretty much maxed out and now we have to start choosing again

New to me and interesting: DARPA goal is satellites in the 100-200km range that 'harvest' the thin atmosphere, ionize the molecules, and accelerate them out electrically to create a bit of thrust to counter the drag. Like xenon ion thrusters, but self fueling.

Program aims to prove a new class of spacecraft that can survive and maneuver in the drag-heavy regime of very low Earth orbit
