This is the same tortured logic that said DOMA wasn't discriminatory because a gay man had the same right to marry a woman as a straight man had.

What I'm imagining is that the north end of the Bernal Cut more or less corresponds to natural drainage, but that the south end cuts perpendicularly across a natural southeastern flow near Milton and Cuvier Streets. Does that seem believable?

I don't get why the Mission Creek tributaries would have flowed along the paths shown on the 1857 topo (left) rather than following the contours downhill (right), especially the part running south on future Douglass Street. Was it culverted?
