As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

I will never buy a smart appliance or use Alexa, Siri, or other “virtual assistants.” I have never used ChatGPT or any other generative AI. I’ve never used Kindle or other e-readers. I want buttons and knobs and switches and pages and the heft and presence of real, analog objects.

i have never, not once, listened to a song on spotify unless it was playing at somebody else's place

what are you a luddite about

I agree that some of the bridge stuff was unclear—maybe it was just meant to be another symbol of corporate/government negligence?—and I feel like the focus on VW Beetles was a stretch. But the writing was very compelling and the overall thesis is solid.

I literally JUST finished this yesterday so it was very fresh in my mind when I saw this announcement.

And as both my kids pointed out, “That shirt is so stupid. Hole punchers are already cordless.”
emmylis.bsky.social
Yep. A guy (presumably a dad) at my 8-year-old’s soccer game last week wore a shirt that read “since we’re redefining everything, this is a cordless hole puncher” with a picture of a semiautomatic & a whole mess of bullets. It’s frightening how quickly this shit got normalized.

one thing that’s definitely new over the past decade or so is the number of bumper stickers and signs threatening to kill you

Begging scientists (and media posts about science) to stop using ChatGPT-generated images

My personal definitions:

Duvet: that awful thing you have to stuff into a cover that never quite fits.

Bedspread: generally a thin quilt, but especially the ones with the itchy synthetic layer underneath the printed side.

Comforter: a thicker bedspread or a prestuffed duvet.

I get the idea that bedspreads/comforters/duvets are 3 separate things, but also call them all “bedspread” if I’m generalizing. It never occurred to me that this is country or old-fashioned!?

One of the wildest things the internet ever called me country for was saying "bedspread."

Since I also still eat things my great grands ate (I was eatin neckbones before I grew teeth) I'll give y'all that.

Iris says “Live, Laugh, Loaf.” Happy #Caturday!
Beautiful, chunky black cat with bright yellow eyes lounges on a patterned rug. Chubby black cat lays on her back with her head tilted to the side and her paws playfully held up in the air. Black cat with a derpy expression and white tufts of fur on her squishy belly lies on a colorful rug.

RIP Patricia Routledge one of the best ever to do it.

Wish I’d known about this sooner! This book has been on my TBR list for a while now and I’m always searching for book clubs that actually suit my interests.

Jane Goodall has died.

She was truly a beacon of light in this world.

I had the good fortune of seeing her speak shortly before COVID arrived. She showed such warmth, compassion, integrity, and intelligence.

Jane, the animals thank you for your selfless work.

I’ve generally heard it’s best to transplant in the opposite season of when a plant is actively in bloom (spring bloomers in fall, fall bloomers in spring), but if you find the right spot and water well while they get re-established it should be fine regardless. Good luck!

Totally surreal seeing #ShonenKnife in a tiny town on the outskirts of Pittsburgh 30+ years after I first heard them. Such a joyful, fun show!

💯I used to buy a pot or 2 of mums every year then throw them out after a month, which bummed me out. Now I have asters going bonkers all over the place, even peeking up through some dormant spring plants. They are super easy, super prolific, and effing gorgeous (in SWPA near Pgh anyway)!!
