A journal that I won’t name check because I have no self respect and still hope to publish in it someday sat on a timely (current events related) paper of mine for months, requested very minor revisions, and then rejected it.

After spending the past ten years getting stochastically terrorized with cyber attacks, large health systems are hanging "kick me" signs on their backs because of their fear of being left behind by a tech revolution they don't understand.

There's a lot going on in this article, and this is far from the most important criticism, but if I were a health system I would simply not implement a tool where the expected workflow is for physicians to copy and paste their patients' charts into a browser window. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I find this essay confusing because a huge amount of Taylor Swift's catalog is about being sad, not happy? Same with the other female artists she name checks for existing on "a higher plane of cute, breezy fun"? It's hard not to read this as internalized misogyny tbh.

What is hypotension, anyway, other than a blood pressure that we infer to be harmful to health based on its numeric lowness?
emilymoin.com
"[The] long-standing research focus on correcting hypotension may have diverted attention from investigation of many other factors—eg, bleeding risk, cardiovascular comorbidities, anesthetic drug dosing, surgical techniques—that may directly affect outcomes and also cause hypotension."

To me, the early seasons of ER are the gold standard against which all other medical dramas must be measured.

The Pitt occupies a weird part of the uncanny valley for me, it's accurate enough that I don't enjoy watching because it feels like being at work but they get enough details wrong that I'm also annoyed the whole time. And I genuinely enjoy a lot of other medical shows, just can't watch this one.

I'm fascinated by this idea of "existing lab information from routine blood work." Whose routine? Why does that information exist?

I am open to the idea that there are people who don't have and don't want to gain the skills to engage directly with their data but every single day that I do I learn the answer to a question you'd never even think to ask unless you were personally staring into the abyss of an uncleaned dataset.

Reddit has been recommending the hematology subreddit to me for some reason and I can't overstate how many posts there are from patients (who are probably mildly dehydrated) scared they have polycythemia vera.

It wasn't clear in the screenshot but the problem is not that it was sycophantic, the problem is that it wrote a pytorch script that just used whatever weights were in the model at the end of the training loop instead of loading the best weights. Which a vibe coder would probably not notice.
