I'm SO tired of watching streaming dramas where the main characters just constantly explain the plot to each other.
Most of the cast remain underdeveloped by the end of this seven-episode season, and like many Netflix series at the moment, The Abandons suffers from a glut of explanatory dialogue. The characters all seem subconsciously aware that they're recapping their lives for an unseen audience, constantly telling each other what they're doing, where they're going, and why. This style of storytelling lines up with recent reports of streaming services asking screenwriters to dumb down their dialogue, catering to viewers who split their attention between their TV screen and phone. Along with being a dismal creative goal, I'm inclined to see this as a self-perpetuating problem. The more time a show spends trying to simplify itself for unengaged viewers, the harder it is for anyone to stay engaged. We're no longer watching proper drama, with all the conversational flourishes and emotional subtext that entails.

I've been a creative pro for 10 years, this is the number 1 question I get.

They want creative work to be recognizably theirs in an instant-- like Miyazaki or Wes Anderson movies.

This is the formula for art style, it's much simpler than you think.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Yep. “Separating the art and the artist” and “Death of the author” are both ways to approach art critically, but they’re different ways.

"Death of the Author" doesn't mean separating the author's bad behaviour from their art. It means taking away their authority and allowing readers to interpret the art based on their own perspectives. It doesn't absolve the author of being a bastard, in fact it may inform how you interpret the art.

On one of the dirty hippy US politics podcasts in 2017, after the torchlit Nazi rally where one of the marchers killed a woman.
And that's what these guys are, these guys that marched in Charlottesville, these are the people who are aware of the unspoken premise of this sort of zombie neoliberalism that we're living in, which is that we're coming to a point where there's gonna be ecological catastrophe, and that it's gonna require either massive redistribution of the ill-gotten gains of the first world, or genocide. And these are the first people who have basically said, "Well if that's the choice, then I choose genocide", ', and they're getting everyone else ready, intellectually and emotionally, for why that's gonna be okay when it happens, why they're not really people. When we're putting all this money into more fucking walls and drones and bombs and guns to keep them away, so that we can watch them die with clear consciences, it's because we've been loaded with the ideology that these guys are now starting to express publicly. On the other side of them, we have people who are saying in full fucking voice, "No, we have the resources to save everybody, to give everybody a decent and worthwhile existence, and that is what we want." And that is the fucking real difference between these two, and you can tell that to the next asshole who tells you that they're actually two sides of the same coin."
