it's correct to be concerned about assisted suicide legislation in a country with an unbelievably inadequate welfare system and incredibly financially burdensome healthcare.

but it's extremely important to acknowledge that the number one issue at hand here is ableism
they get this info from everyone who commits suicide with a doctor's help and it goes:
1. loss of autonomy
2. difficulty engaging in enjoyable activities
3. loss of dignity
4. feeling like a burden
5. concerns about untreatable pain
6. finances

since illinois is joining oregon with "right to die" legislation, here is your reminder that the top reported reasons in oregon for requesting assisted suicide are "loss of autonomy" and "difficulty engaging in enjoyable activities," so: being disabled
thinking about this again, as I often do of a morning. otoh I think most people don’t know that the most deeply sympathetic use-case - someone in untreatable pain - is not the main self-reported reason for the suicides. it’s actually second to last (after “burden on family”)
i’ve wondered for a while why in some places it has expanded so much, while in others it just hasn’t. i’m in OR where we’ve had assisted suicide for 25 years. no expansion to allow euthanasia or beyond time-limited terminal illness (though the actual deaths have gone up quite a lot the past 2 yrs)

"never tell a story with a strange or intriguing setting unless laying it all bare in full detail is a major part of it" is such a weird way to think about speculative fiction t b h
is there any tv take more annoying than "guy who's mad the show isn't a puzzle box"

love my protestant homies but it's weird to look at one (1) good depiction of a catholic priest preaching the gospel and ministering and giving people the sacraments and be like "he's obviously protestant"

my "wake up dead man" take is mostly the same as everyone else's, my personal contribution is that hearing him say "God, the Father of mercies, &c..." caught me by surprise and made me fully cry in front of my dog. I'm so immensely grateful for the sacrament of confession

The circular logic of carbrain: "Sure, driving irresponsibly is risking other people's lives for funsies, but it's also the norm that people get away with it and don't think it's a big deal. So it would be cruel to make a big deal of it and start enforcing consequences. because it is the norm."

I don't drive but I do have a fancy license and if I lost it I would lose my job. the idea that this means the government has to be nice to me and not take it away even if I show up drunk is, plainly, totally insane.
it's not a spanking. the license is what you get when you prove you can safely drive the car. if you go on to prove you actually can't or won't prevent yourself from doing something insanely dangerous with it, the license goes away.

if I had fifty cents for every time someone randomly brought up the fact that lights flicker at 60Hz to me in the past week, all in totally different contexts, I would have $1.50, which is pretty crazy actually

okay here are my two FAM/NFP hot takes: 1) marquette should really be strongly encouraging cross-checking with a progesterone sign and 2) creighton should never be used for avoiding pregnancy, it's way too confusing and I've heard from a number of people that they juice their efficacy numbers

the equitable solution to the problem of "but fines affect poor people much more than the rich!"
If they don’t like the fees, we could just revoke the license of everyone who gets a DUI instead

checked back in on the fam/nfp subreddit after having to leave like 3 years ago for my own sanity. every fifth post is "strongly trying to avoid, can't I just break four of my method's rules, it would be so much cheaper and easier" with a bunch of replies like "I've been thinking the same thing" 🫠

this is probably the single most annoying and frustrating thing on reddit. guy: "how hard is it to get rid of recessed lights? I don't like them." every single fucking reply: "you're wrong"
