Why don't firms publish pay in their job adverts?

We present the first experimental evidence on how (not) posting wages changes the applicant pool, and whether that gives firms a reason to hide wage info.

Great short thread by my co-author Lukas + link to the full paper👇

I think people really struggle w partially consolidated authoritarianism, either understating our problem or understating our power

It's like we're in a liminal fascist space. And not recognizing how far gone we are or thinking we're simply too far gone are both grave errors we can't afford to make
qjurecic.bsky.social
any argument that trump has fully consolidated authoritarian power has to contend with the fact that the government wants to deport kilmar abrego garcia to uganda but hasn't done so, because a judge told them not to
zackbeauchamp.bsky.social
I find this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece helpful in clarifying why I disagree with the "America is already in competitive authoritarianism" thesis.

Don's checklist shows things that Trump has tried to do, but he hasn't *succeeded* in most areas

I don't see how we can enroll international phd students if they can't get a visa for the duration of the phd, 4 years isn't long enough.
osamet.bsky.social
I know there's a lot happening today, but this is sneaking in under the radar. This proposed new rule would absolutely crush foreign PhD students, potentially making it impossible for them to enroll with any certainty of their ability to finish www.politico.com/news/2025/08...

Over 125 economists signed the open letter calling on the President, Congress, and the American public to uphold the principles of Federal Reserve independence and not remove Lisa Cook without due process.

There's still time to sign! And please share.

Glad to see this point about the role of racism in targeting of Lisa Cook from @nathantankus.bsky.social I do feel it’s been downplayed for exactly the reasons he alludes to
“Trump certainly has a disdain for Federal Reserve independence. However, he also has been purging Black people from government and it would be a mistake to think racism does not play a major role in how Lisa Cook has been targeted. I know for many readers this is a boring, uninteresting or even “ideological” point. In my view it is a fact and I think it is long past time to push through the discomfort or disdain that many people have about talking about racism and race in everyday politics. At the most basic level, you will not understand what’s going on without it. The attack on “DEI” is part of the restructuring of our government around Trump’s personal agenda.”

I agree with much of this, absolutely backwards if the goal is lower interest rates.

Long before she joined the Fed, Lisa Cook stood out in a field dominated by white men. She talked about how her experience with racism informed her approach to economics.
Now, she is Trump’s latest target in his effort to exert more control over the central bank.

Taps the sign

The institutions of this economy depend on the institutions of this democracy.
brendannyhan.bsky.social
You can repeat this for almost any issue:

It's of course true that US democracy can survive {improper pressure on the Fed, changes to executive branch staffing, spending disputes with Congress, etc.} in normal times.

But we have an authoritarian president trying to consolidate autocratic control!
brendannyhan.bsky.social
An ongoing issue in Trump II is people's insistence on evaluating every action in isolation.

It's of course true that US democracy can survive a partisan mid-decade redistricting under normal circumstances.

But we have an authoritarian president trying to consolidate autocratic control!

A key challenge for BLS is adequate funding for data collection and modernization. During my tenure I tried to identify the causes. One person told me, ‘your problem is that while BLS has no enemies you also have no friends’ meaning no powerful interest groups advocating for economic data.

Every business day, big capitalist institutions depend on having access to unbiased economic statistics. It's time for them to step up and help protect the B.L.S. and other statistical agencies from Trump's encroachments.
