We Bury the Dead poster Emmett Watkins Jr. We Bury the Dead 2024 Watched January 4, 2026 I'm writting this review hella late, been about two weeks since I've seen it. But I remember it fondly. The worst part about the movie is that its horror undertones remain undertones the entire film. Trailers hint at a zombie like situation, but the creatures here are not zombies, and the details of that difference are what make the movie unique. But if you are looking for a more traditional horror film, with high kill counts and major character deaths, you will be disapointed. I was intally, as the story just isn't as exciting to watch play out as that expected film would have been. But I still walked away from the film with a lot to think about, which I can't help but recognize as a hallmark of a great film. What makes this movie so compelling is that it's really about humanity, and how much of it remains after our bodies begin to decay. The core story has a suprising amount in common with Paris, Texas, tho mercifully less depressing. I say this because the theme of flawed characters seeking redemption or closure is all up in this movie. But stranger than that, this somber tone acompanies a world that is only so different from our world today. Most "zombie" movies are just as centered on the depravity of man as it is on the depravity of the undead monsters. But here, the zombies are more like stray animals that sometimes show signs of recognition of thier previous life. This means, asside from the government lockdown and attempts to clean up, people can just live without much fear. This makes it feel like Zombieland in a really facinating way. The movie is very modest, coldly filmed, and lacking much in the way of action. But the themes it plays with are really facinating, and it's use of flawed characters makes the story feel more grounded and authentic. I did not love how quickly and conclusively the film ends, as it felt too perfect of an ending to her character arch. But the film is still a unique exploration of the more spiritual side of the undead.

Ive been thinking about this lately a lot. Game studios don't have thier reputations based on the name, its based on the people. When those people leave overtime or even en masse, that isn't the same studio. That's obvious but we so often talk about them like they're the same team for 20 years.

I often think about Jonathan Cooper's posts about TLOU2, that the studio ran out of seasoned game animators because its reputation was so bad and thus had to hire film folks who had to be taught how to put games together.

I know how no one has cared about meta vr exclusives at all, even when games like Asgard's Wrath were incredibly well reviewed. I didn't care much myself but its a travesty that all these studios with all these legacies are dropping like flies, let alone the workers themselves. Its a goddammit shame

-Armature, the devs behind the VR port of Resident Evil 4
-Twisted Pixel, the studio that made Deadpool VR
-Sanzaru, which developed Asgard's Wrath 1 and 2.

I give Nintendo a lot of completely justified shit but I genuinely wish that every company that does a year end recap thing would wait until the year fully ends. Love the extra effort that tine gavebrm, like videos! Plus, I barely played my Switch in 2025 so I love the prior year data being here too
