Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

What is wild about this story is that Deloitte has been allowed to keep 80% of the massive fees it charged for using ChatGPT to produce rubbish and passing it off as actual work. (One might add, why was a consulting firm purporting to give legal advice anyway, hmmm?)

Keep meaning to try this on mum's laptop (which the boy used in primary school). But I keep failing to go and buy a flash drive. Linux Mint looks pretty good. Did about three videos worth of "research" on YouTube. Seems Mint is a fair bit easier than Ubuntu was ten or so years ago.
