Hugely pleased to have the support of @adrianramsay.bsky.social who knows CCS is just more fossil fuel infrastructure

Decarbonising: creating jobs in renewables, insulation, & nature restoration is the way

Ross, please read why the climate problems with this plan go beyond FF production continuing with tiebacks. As part of the proposed transition off FF production, the plan increases FF consumption in UK by having fossil based CCS as a key transition pathway

🔥🔥🔥 While everyone is distracted by other budget news, Labour have just announced that they will allow more drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea 🔥🔥🔥

Genuinely catastrophic for our climate and further proof that Labour care more about corporate profits than people or planet.

Govt has just slipped out its North Sea Future Plan while all eyes are on the budget.

Glad govt sticking to manifesto promises not to grant new licenses but disappointing to see tie-backs allowed - a needless concession to an industry in decline that won't help energy security.

👀 So while all eyes were on the budget, Ministers just slipped out their North Sea Future Plan. While it’s good to see them stick to manifesto pledge not to grant new licenses, it’s a shame to see approval of “tiebacks” to existing fields - unnecessary concession that undermines climate messages

Yes, but pls note new UK policy is not as good as it appears at first. Yes it deals with the UK as a long-term FF producer; however same North Sea plan locks in gas (increasingly LNG) based carbon capture as a way to transition potentially increasing UK FF consumption

This is huge. On the same day Canada announces a new tarsands pipeline and a roll back of climate policy UK announces no new oil and gas licences and a fossil fuel phase out plan. Congratulations and thank you to the UK for your leadership. And Canada?! PM Mark Carney, embarrassing. #cdnpoli
Huge news from the UK today: after UN climate talks in which there was a massive fight over language on fossil fuels, the UK government today announced that it will in fact be keeping many millions of barrels of oil & gas in the ground. Deeds rather than just words for a change! 🧵

🧵 /1 Hi @tessakhan.bsky.social - You and Uplift have succeeded here - you deserve huge credit 🙏🙏

However, there is a dark side to this new North Sea plan in which the fossil fuel industry &lobbyists win - lock-in to gas based carbon capture

"In the UK the top ten percent of energy users use five times more than the bottom ten percent. So equity is absolutely at the heart of the climate agenda. Until we start to have that dialogue, about the deep inequities in our society, we will continue to fail on climate change." - Kevin Anderson.
Short interview on the BBC Today programme with Amol Rajan, discussing the upcoming Brazil COP and how the so-called “cost of living crisis” is being (mis)used by leaders and high emitters to avoid taking meaningful action on climate change.

It was good you spoke truth to the R4 audience. It was disappointing that Amol failed to dig into the ideas you put forward regarding the centrality of equity. That last bit felt rushed. I think were he to interview you for his "Radical" podcast, there could be time to elucidate the reality we face.

Key point from the brilliant Prof @kevinclimate.bsky.social at the National Emergency Briefing, the UK's climate plans are based on the wildly untenable assumption that the country can have 3x its equitable share of the remaining global carbon budget for meeting the 1.5C guardrail.

Professor Kevin Anderson delivers some granite hard truths @kevinclimate.bsky.social

"We need profound shifts in our social norms.

It is too late for non-radical solutions.

The UK is emitting far more than its fair share of greenhouse gases.

We need deep cuts in energy use."

Societal and ecological collapse at 3-4C warming.

For <2C, the UK has 7 years of current CO2 emissions.

Drax and CCS are delay tech.

Heat pumps, good public transport, and deep cuts of aviation are essential.

Yes. 8% is the global reduction rate from the start of 2026 &for an “83% chance of not exceeding 2°C” (based on Lamboll et al 2023 budgets). Include a relatively weak interpretation of international equity & the UK reduction rate would be nearer 13%pa; similar to that for most ‘developed’ countries.

Lots of journalists attended, tho’ I don’t think from the BBC. Prior to the event the Today programme did discuss it with Chris Packham. My experience has been that that the BBC has long run scared of tackling climate mitigation issues head on, generally preferring more saccharine pseudo-journalism.
