Dit klinkt misschien onaardig, maar dit is echt heel goed nieuws!

Er gaan veel meer mensen door door luchtvervuiliing door houtstook dan door het rijden door rood licht. En dat accepteren we (terecht) ook niet. Code rood/oranje? Niet stoken!

Complimenten aan Amersfoort!

Fossil-fuel extraction massively outweighs critical mineral mining needs (quite literally)

– We dig up tens of billions of tonnes of stuff every year to produce coal, oil & gas
– Raw-material extraction for critical minerals would be a fraction of that, even under net-zero

No surprise: new analysis shows that heat pumps can deliver excellent performance even in older buildings with no meaningful correlation between building age & heat pump efficiency.

This is in line with my own experience of having a heat pump in a 1880 Victorian home with only modest insulation.

DHL Deutsche Post has installed six HPC chargers for its expanding fleet of electric heavy-duty vehicles. A further 164 HPC charging points will be installed at various sites by 2027.

DHL already has a fleet of 35,000 electric delivery vans (+ 40,000 charging points).

While we've been quite good at predicting life-expectancy gains, we've systematically been too optimistic about future fertility trends. That means there's a significant risk we're underestimating population ageing today too.
We better prepare pension systems for a low-fertility future.

Very glad to see our joint paper on smart tariffs and services in Europe now published!

What do these tariffs do, where are they emerging and what inputs do they use to optimise EV charging, heating and other household loads?
NEW RESEARCH:

Demand flexibility becomes more and more attractive.

We found a whopping 480 smart tariffs and services across Europe — a 3x increase since our 2021/2022 study.

How to Measure Climate Progress

Yes, it's about CO₂, CH₄, W/m², and every ±0.1°C.

But yes, moving off oil, coal, and gas is about improving economic competitiveness and human prosperity for decades to come.

A historic turning point for clean heating in Europe: For the first time, in the first half of 2025 sales of heat pumps in Germany have surpassed those of gas boilers.

This is a big milestone, demonstrating that the transition away from fossil fuels in our buildings is not just a future ambition.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

This trial demonstrates the feasibility of controlling heat pumps based on energy prices while maintaining user comfort. An increasing number of energy suppliers are offering time-variable pricing (directly to consumers or as background input) alongside smart control as a bundle.
We have the results of a cool new trial out today, a collaboration between Nesta and OVO.

I'll put some key charts in a thread, but the tl;dr is:
- 58 customers let us operate their heat pump remotely
- We flexed the heat pumps to lower the cost of electricity
- Most people were fine with it
