Coming up very soon, we were very lucky to chat with Jen Sugden, one of the writers of the Victorian Steampunk comedy novel "High Vaultage."

Jen joined us to discuss Maskerade.
Keep an eye out in the usual places for this one.

Ah, the joy of a well organised Discworld display.

Well, the next episode of Discworld Order will see me do more research than I've done before for an episode: 2 books, 1 film, and some extra video watching.

I managed to get a reference to failed Aberdeen winger Jeffrey de Vischeer into this podcast, which is presumably a first.

Chatting Discworld with Mark is always a pleasure and you should all give it a listen!

I have a podcast recording tomorrow, so of course, I did the sensible thing and spent half an hour today on notes for the next two episodes instead.

In times like these, I desperately recommend reading Terry Pratchett.

It's an instant balm for my anxiety and depression with all the world's current events.

Over the last few weeks, I've read 2-4 Discworld books a week, and it has significantly improved my mental health.

Some days, you just end up having 3 different conversations about the same subject.

Such was the case today, and yes, I was talking about Discworld.

One of the things with a Discworld re-read is that you get 16 books in and realise that you STILL haven't come across one of the regulars.

Emma Newman's Planetfall series is an incredible mix of very good sci-fi, well handled portrayals of mental health issues and anti-capitalist sentiment.

Newman is going through a tough time health wise, so I highly recommend this series.
I've also written the Planetfall sequence (which was shortlisted for the Best Series Hugo Award 2020) is four interconnected standalone novels and a short story collection, available wherever you buy books. I self-pubbed the collection ebook: enewman.co.uk/before-after... (Ko-Fi shop is best for me)

One of my local antiques centres has a lot of second-hand books. It turns out that this includes almost an entire Discworld collection.

I helped myself to 5 paperbacks just so that I can have every Josh Kirby cover for my collection to make it feel a bit more uniform.

Lords and Ladies is a book I love with my soul. It's hard to summarise why it works so well, but this episode dives into everything from Pratchett's riff on Tolkien's Elves to the many lives of Granny Weatherwax and some very, very silly humour. Loved it.
Episode 13 of Discworld Order is out now.
Dermot Byrne joins Mark to talk about Lords and Ladies, as we discuss:
Magrat's growth arc
Pratchett's best fight scenes to date

There is one book that I fully expected to be recommended by a guest on the podcast before the end of Discworld Order.
Well, the wait is over. If you're intrigued, tune in to episode 13 of dWo on Lords & Ladies when that comes out to find out what it is.

I love that in Lords and Ladies, Pratchett reduces the impact of a deus ex machina, but in the same book he also uses a much smaller deus ex banana.
June 18, 2025 at 8:53 PM
It feels fitting that I'm putting off the notes for Granny and Magrat for last while writing up my Lords and Ladies notes.

It definitely feels like I'm going to miss something there. Then again, there's a lot to get your teeth into.
