The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. It would be really nice if @cswe.bsky.social & @naswsocialworkers.bsky.social took a vocal stand on why social workers students need these courses to be both effective and ethical practitioners with the marginalized populations they will work with.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Among countless banned & challenged books is "Fry Bread" by Kevin Noble Maillard.

In support of the #TeachTruth campaign & to raise awareness about the dangers of censorship, every Lush store has a display about the ban.

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

There can be no social justice without disability justice.

You want to fight fascism? Engage the disability community.

Practice inclusivity. Wear a mask. Make protests and resistance accessible.

Don’t treat us expendable, less than or “better off dead”.

Don’t leave us behind.

A Google doc of current meds, last & upcoming appointments, & all provider names & numbers to share w/ other family members. I know my brother never looks at ours for my dad, but he would have no idea where to begin without it if something happens to me.

Ireland has approved plans to permanently implement a basic income program that will support up to 2,200 artists.

A cost-benefit analysis found that for every €1 invested, society receives €1.39 back.

Officials from other countries are now expressing interest in the program.

“What Cheer” may have been a famous play leading to the town’s name, but only Southern Iowans will pronounce it correctly as “Watch-Ear.”

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

In the US, the National Association of Black Social Workers issued a position statement in 1972 advocating against transracial adoption, basically because of the systemic harm tearing apart Black families & the additional harm of loss of cultural connections & racism in adoptive families.

Curious in if when deciding to remove ethnicity as a consideration in adoption, they explored why kids of color are more likely to be in care and up for adoption. The same issue happens in the US, but we know it’s systemic racial bias at play at all levels of the child welfare system.

It’s been a long time since I was a social worker in the UK, but this sentence floored me: “While we sometimes don’t think about the role of identity as professionals, it's important to stay curious to deliver anti-racist practices.” In the US, this is an ethical obligation, not a suggestion.

Facial recognition tech:
🕵️ is mass surveillance

⚠️ disproportionately impacts racialised communities

We need to oppose this: amn.st/6008AqWA0
Police Scotland has decided move ahead with the use of Live Facial Recognition technology by law enforcement in Scotland.
Amnesty firmly opposes the use of this dangerous technology.

Every time the "trans people are 1% of the U.S. population" thing comes up, I feel compelled to point out that the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum says that Jewish people made up about 0.75% of the population of Germany in 1933.

Mourning those murdered by Hamas isn't incompatible with mourning those murdered by the Israeli state.

Demanding that the hostages return isn't incompatible with naming & demanding an end to genocide.

Naming the power imbalance & impact thereof doesn't desecrate those murdered two years ago today.

SARS-CoV-2 isn’t just a respiratory virus. Its neurological and immunological consequences are real, measurable, and ongoing.

It targets the brain, impairs cognition, erodes empathy, and subtly reshapes populations.

Ignoring it doesn’t make it harmless, it makes the world more dangerous.
