i know this is hardly a new take but isn’t it WILD that wikimedia has to ask for donations to keep itself afloat when every LLM in the world has been trained on wikipedia data?
This is my cyclical reminder that there's really only one consistently reliable source of info in the public record that isn't owned by right wing billionaires, who really want to put an end to it.

Please give at least the $2.75 minimum they request if you can.

I’m flabbergasted that this has never existed before, though I probably shouldn't be. What a milestone!

I love that many of the replies to Gretchen’s post mention the same things I thought of immediately after hearing ‘muuushroom muuuushroom!’ in my head (Homestar Runner, Salad Fingers). Really reinforces the point!
Sometimes people are like "aren't you worried about the kids and their nonsensical new brainrot memes"

But like, the thing is, I can still spot a member of my internet generation by how they respond to "badger badger badger badger"

Playing with language and rhythm is fun, it'll be fine!
One of the things we've enjoyed the most about the six-seven phenomenon is the way it comes with a gesture, which we've also seen represented in emoji form as:

If this is part of your defense of using generative AI, you really can't make the argument that generative AI is going to contribute to efficiency or productivity. Just...why? Seriously, why?
Excerpt taken from an article on Verge.
The fact that the ad took so much longer, with so much extra effort only to come out so much worse than it would be to shoot it traditionally. GenAI videos proving themselves not as useful as most techbros dream them to be.

It's quiet at the library desk today, so I'm going to do a little thread with a few of my favorite reads from this year. First up, appropriately, is The Library: A Fragile History by @apettegree.bsky.social and Arthur der Weduwen. profilebooks.com/work/the-lib...

So love wobbegongs. Everything is good about the wobbegong. Its name. Its flattened Oscar the Grouch face. Its frondy bits. Its lazy life as a hungry rug. And it’s a shark. Outstanding animal 10/10
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

Journalists, why not reach out to some of the fine people in my replies to ask them how the British Library cyberattack of 2023 has had an impact on their research, their creative work, and their careers? This could make for a powerful piece revealing the human side to the damage this has done.
I have been WAITING for a journalist to write this story.

I specialize in manuscripts produced in England between 1300 and 1500. If this had occurred in the midst of writing my dissertation or first book, it would have exploded my career.
I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight
