We passed our first tests with flying colors!
The first new Amtrak Cascades train is set to depart the test track in Pueblo, CO following several months of testing. Next, it heads out for more testing on the east coast before starting service in the PNW in 2026. This is the 1st of 7 new trainsets.
The first of eight new Amtrak Cascades trainsets is on the tracks after successfully passing its first round of testing with flying colors. It will travel from Pueblo, Colorado, to the east coast for its next round of testing. Pictured on the end is one of two new ALC-42E locomotives that we are also getting. There are tall, tan-colored grasses in the foreground and blue sky surrounds the trainset. The new trainsets will be in service on the Amtrak Cascades corridor in 2026.

A certain segment of social media mis very focused on a letter sent out by the city of Richmond this weekend and what a recent court ruling means for the future of land ownership in B.C. Helpful to read measured and informed takes from people who specialize in that area of law (see next post)
A post from B.C. Conservative Party leader John Rustad that says “We live in unprecedented times. In Richmond, homeowners are being told that their properties may be at risk following a decision granting control of land to an Indigenous band. Property rights form one of the fundamental pillars of Western society. This decision cannot stand.” The letter, from Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie reads Please take note that the recent BC Supreme Court decision of Cowichan Tribes v Canada, 2025 BCSC 1490 made some very important decisions which could negatively affect the title to your property. A briefing paper prepared by City of Richmond staff is attached for your reference. If you look at the draft map attached to the briefing, your property is located within the Claim Area outlined in green. For those whose property is in the area outlined in black, the Court has declared aboriginal title to your property which may compromise the status and validity of your ownership - this was mandated without any prior notice to the landowners. The entire area outlined in green is claimed on appeal by the Cowichan First Nations. Given the serious implications of this Court decision and the pending appeal, The City is hosting an information session to be held on Tuesday October 28, 2025, at 7:00pm at Richmond City Hall. NEW: After years of Canada claiming it won't support Azov Brigade due to its far-right ideology and neo-Nazi links, the Canadian Defence Attache in Ukraine met with Azov at the Embassy this summer.

It remains wild to me how adamant the public broadcaster seems to be that Canada Post be whittled down and ultimately privatized, with no seeming realization that same pressure will eventually come for the CBC too if it succeeds with the postal service.
