People occasionally just flip [me] off or whatever, but nobody's come up to me and tried to make a statement about anything. Personally, it's kind of dumb. It's just a vehicle. So it's ironic that it would even become a political statement, but nonetheless it is. Forgot the important detail about my mother's family: she's first generation. Her parents & brother immigrated to the United States from Finland in the early 50's and their surname still lost the proper Finnish spelling when they arrived.

We didn't realize until I was in my early twenties that my last name was misspelled on my social security card and it's a very obvious "this was typed by someone who does thousands of these a week" and bungled a 'k' for the 'h' in our surname.

Gentle reminder: I am seeing more "I cannot afford pet food" posts & if you might face this in the near future/now, I recommend checking your local area's subreddit and posting if anyone knows of local programs for pet food. Many areas have small under-the-radar charities that give out pet food.

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.

And like, I've got stories from both side of this coin. My paternal family is French-Canadian and, according to my dad, my great-grandfather made the decision to drop the 's' from the end of our last name.

The only thing lost from my mother's Finnish surname were the accent marks.

Girl, they came over here in the forties after the war. We're maybe two generations removed from their last name getting changed by immigration.
