What Can Language Models Tell Us About Human Cognition?

doi.org/10.1177/0963...
We try to place some constraints on what kind of language models might be useful for helping our understanding of cognition
#academicSky #psychSciSky #CogSci #openAccess
Visualization of corpus size used to train a sample of language models. Many language models use corpora orders of magnitude larger than what humans can plausibly absorb over a lifetime

Returns from a chain bookshop have reduced our sales to a minus figure in the most important sales month of the year.

Please support independent bookshops this Christmas.

as a cognitive scientist, I can confirm we don't know how humans think

I’m sorry Reg, but you’re officially an influencer now. I don’t make the rules 🤷

I'm loving these Catherine Connolly posts. We should use a hashtag for them ? #SmearTheBejaysis #SpeirGorm

Catherine Connolly didn't raise her index finger from the steering wheel to acknowledge me when I pulled in to let her continue on!

Catherine Connolly never thanked the driver when she got off bus 10 years ago.

We got solar panels installed about a month ago, and we’re running at about 75% energy independence. In autumn. In Ireland. This is not some unsolvable quantum physics problem for god’s sake 🤦

Are you looking for any particular kinds of contexts Clare? I really like the visualisation of language used in teacher/professor evaluations; simple but powerful benschmidt.org/profGender/

A green background with white and bright green text that reads "Help shape the future of the CogSci Society and apply to be a member of the STUDENT COMMITTEE". To the right of the text, there are two simple, light green icons of people. An arrow connects the top icon to a graduation cap icon, which then connects to the bottom icon, symbolizing a path of learning and development.

For sure! And if we did this at scale, the return on investment would be an absolute no brainer

Oh I know, but such a ludicrous statement to make in any context.

I know, I know, this isn’t the answer to everything, but cmon, is a little creative thinking too much to ask for?
