“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

MLK Jr.

Loving does not mean ignoring abuse, bigotry and violence, but if hate grows within us, we are defeated.

Love is the difficult way through these brutal times.

Good night.
Back home. The way some folks are driving in this weather blows my mind. In the course I am currently taking they spoke on Friday about how dangerous working in snow removal can be, and driving is part of why.

The #OntarioStorm this evening in #Toronto

[Video shows a snow-covered street in downtown Toronto (Jarvis, just south of Gerrard). Snow is blowing towards me vigorously. The sidewalk is covered in up to a foot of snow in some places. Cars are driving up and down the street on my right.]

Even @theguardian.com has video of the first part of Pretti's execution on autoplay on their front page.

Exhausted empaths wish that more of the world would understand that just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
I rarely watch television. I don't watch many movies anymore and if I do, I am careful about the violence I will see. I struggle to read books, for example on slavery, that describe violence. I don't need to see videos of an execution to feel empathy for the victim or anger at the murderers...

In some workshops I used to facilitate, I would often ask participants:

A commitment to police and policing means you have to ignore many things…

What do we have to ignore? [MAKE A LIST]

Folks would share a lot of great ideas. They would never say *impunity* but it should always be on the list

Looked up some stats.

Over 600 people are killed each year by police in the US.

just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now
Our government is murdering the citizens of this country. They are doing it without any checks on their violence

Grrrr.

In Kingston, Jamaica, when I was growing up, dogs in my neighborhood would roam in packs. I got somewhat attacked once and fell off my bike. This is what dogs do. Maybe we should do a better job of protecting ourselves (e.g. don't travel alone or stay away) instead of killing them?

I was a sensitive kid. I loved cats. I had OCD, undiagnosed.

When I was 9, a fraternity brother tortured a cat to death in my hometown. The details even now are beyond imagination. archive.is/xdmUL

I was traumatized for years from reading the news story.

The torturer? Now the head of the NRA.

This and the thread it's from.

I can't wrap my head around how blatantly corrupt the US government is right now, and how people in the US cope with that. It's good to see folks who might normally be silent, speaking up.
when the driving range guys are talking about masked agents of the state you’ve probably made a strategic error if you’re the state

Pam Bondi just sent a letter to Minnesota officials saying ICE will leave if the state turns over its voter database to Trump.

Guess what? This has never been about safety or immigration. It’s a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.

What’s happening now in the US is horrible. It’s fascism and causing death and destruction that cannot be tamed down. However, Langston Hughes said in the 1920s that Black folks have been living under fascism for their entire existence in the US. Some of you are being extremely racist by 1/

The mention made of US citizenship in the outrage around Alex Pretti's brutal killing is discouraging. People may be trying to emphasize that ICE puts everyone at risk, but talking about Alex's citizenship insidiously reinforces prejudice towards foreigners. No human being deserves such treatment.

The "worst problem you've never heard of" is the leading cause of Black land loss in this country.

Over the years, it's seen Black families stripped of hundreds of billions of dollars in land. It's called "heirs' property."
