While playing 5e, can you never find a spell worth casting that doesn't eat at that concentration you're already holding?
In #6thDawn I've modified spellcasting where concentration is usually optional, but you might not want to give it up.

Optional Concentration

Some spells have an active component beyond yourself that you must control, but otherwise work without your intervention. If you choose to concentrate on these spells, they work just as concentration spells above. However, you can choose to not concentrate on them, this keeps the spell going with no control over it whatsoever.
Fear

3rd-rank illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self (30-foot cone)
Components: V, S, M (a white feather or the heart of a hen)
Duration: Optional concentration, up to 1 minute

You project a phantasmal image of a creature's worst fears. Each creature in a 30-foot cone must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or drop whatever it is holding and become frightened of you for the duration. *While concentrating on this spell*, you can use your action to target all creatures in another 30-foot cone, but can't affect a creature again if it has succeeded on a saving throw against this casting of fear. Invisibility
2nd-rank illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (an eyelash encased in gum arabic)
Duration: Optional concentration, up to 1 hour

A creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. Anything the target is wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on the target's person. The spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell.

*While concentrating on the spell* and no creatures currently benefit from the spell, you can use your action to touch another creature to turn it invisible. Moonbeam
2nd-rank evocation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S, M (several seeds of any moonseed plant and a piece of opalescent feldspar)
Duration: Optional concentration, up to 1 minute

A silvery beam of pale light shines down in a 5-foot radius, 40-foot-high cylinder centered on a point within range. Until the spell ends, dim light fills the cylinder.

When a creature enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it is engulfed in ghostly flames that cause searing pain, and it must make a Constitution saving throw. It takes 2d10 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

A shapechanger makes its saving throw with disadvantage. If it fails, it also instantly reverts to its original form and can't assume a different form until it leaves the spell's light.

*While concentrating on this spell*, you can use an action to move the beam 60 feet in any direction.

The lack of consistency within and between games is kind of my problem with digimon. Otherwise, I love it

Yeah, jokes aside, I tend to call the small gnolls aardgnolls, since aardwolves (a type of hyena, ignore the name) are smol

Being a lost draconian from before the start of the war of the lance is a hell of a trip

and the realisation that he is, in fact, a monster (that explodes on death/unconsciousness)

My dragonlance character would probably have something aspirational about not wanting to be seen as an object to be studied or a monster, talking about how the closest thing he had to a father died, attending the funeral, the closest thing he had to a home being destroyed,

Great old ones are all boomers, after all. They don't read the up to date textbooks and learn their info is out of date

Cultist: "I don't understand! We waited until all the planets were aligned and did the ritual. Why did it not work?"

Eldritch being: "All the planets?"

Cultist: "Well... Pluto doesn't count-"

Eldritch Being: "IT DOES TO ME!!!"

As there seems to be some talk online about how licensed TTRPGs are bad, I’d like to reshare my old rebuttal:
I love licensed TTRPGs and here are some great examples why -

This is some of the best political news I've seen in a very long time.

There's a clear a way to end the Citizens United precedent by changing state incorporation laws - and now luminaries in both parties are forcing a vote on it in the 2026 election.

I mean, one ended with the entire world being destroyed and one of the protagonists being reunited with the brother he didn't know he had who died trying to find him. So there's that

8yo DM: The mindflayer hits and his tentacles attach to your head.

Me: This sucks!

8yo DM: Daddy! I am trying to create a horrific battle scene with a terrifying mood, and I will not laugh at your dad jokes!

Well, this supports my idea of a "Great" "Old" one being an unfathomably old treasure of incomprehensible value

When Lovecraft wrote about incomprehensible aliens, he (a racist) had a cultural other in mind. It's foundational to the Lovecraftian horror that this incomprehensibility isn't one-way, that we are also alien to the horrors. Thus, the Lovecraftian alien now represents our modern billionaire class.
