vacationing in Sydney (Australia) this week has left me nearly in tears about the state of public washrooms in Canada several times. I have used them:
-at the beach
-at train stations
-in parks
-at circular quay
-at an indoor/outdoor mall
all were spotless, well-equipped, and without big lineups.
Reminder that #OttCity ph1 LRT only got 3 washrooms at 13 ph1 stations; 2 (each end) forced on city by prov and 1 at Bayview due to advocacy; 1 was added at Line 2; AFAIK there are none added to rest of ph2; most are closed more often than open. This is a gender and equity issue. 1/
Transit stations should have public bathrooms.

1. Eyecare for all (expand seniors' ohip coverage to everyone)
2. CareOntario: retrain workers impacted by trade war to work in healthcare and childcare
3. Childcare for all (see point #2; open provincially-run ECE centres EVERYWHERE)
Thought experiment time, Ontario: Part of Zohran Mamdani's success was relentless message discipline with his 3 key ideas. If you could only pick 3 *big*, *bold* ideas for a progressive party in Ontario that would appeal to the *whole* population, what would they be? Quote post with ideas!

not to mention Carney himself is MP of Nepean. just seems eminently self-defeating to prune public service in your first budget when public servants are the main constituency of your riding. (btw just looked it up and seems Carney still does not have a riding office in Nepean 🙃)
If nothing else, eliminating 40,000 public service jobs likely increases the odds @brucefanjoy.bsky.social will not be reelected in the Ottawa-area riding of Carleton

I asked @dtcochrane.bsky.social about what these job losses mean for public servants and the communities supported by those jobs
🎧 PODCAST: Looking inside Mark Carney’s ‘extremely Orwellian’ austerity budget

From $60 billion in cuts to eliminating 40,000 jobs, Canadian Labour Congress Sr. Economist @dtcochrane.bsky.social shares his impressions of the Carney government's first budget live inside the media lock-up in Ottawa

just gotta end this wonderful night with a throwback to the period of time when curtis sliwa appeared regularly on NY1's inside city hall, lampooning andrew cuomo (he donned the costume and did this act every time cuomo came up, which was OFTEN):

NY1 HAS CALLED IT!!!!!! IT IS OFFICIAL!!!!! ZOHRAN MAMDANI IS MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!!!!!!

as a former new yorker, I can say with authority that the people of new york have long received the short end of the stick when it comes to their political representation. I really hope that new yorkers like this 91-year-old lady finally get the representation they want and deserve today.

this is the lord's work
Was honored to help @chana.bsky.social edit this deep dive compilation of Curtis Sliwa lore gathered over weeks. There is so much jaw-dropping material, we simply could not bear to make it shorter than 76 slides.
I’m sorry but you still don’t know enough about Curtis Sliwa

I need to stop doomscrolling from sadness and go to bed

both of these are extremely true and I am fine being a self-hating resident of toronto
The rest of the country bitching when Toronto gives them a rare opportunity to feel desperately alive is the energy of the rest of Canada, for the record
The jays having one good inning and then spending three hours holding everyone hostage while they waste any and all goodwill is the energy Toronto brings to this nation, I just want Americans to know this

@tiomoid.bsky.social is trying to cheer me up by playing my favourite YouTube videos. unfortunately one of them happens to be a perfect representation of what the blue jays did tonight youtu.be/FkHbC1RSjv8

November 2, 2025 at 4:08 AM

ok rabid nationalism and some sentimentality about my dad dying at the start of this crazy season may have lured me into caring about this series, but this game has now reaffirmed that my lifelong instincts were correct and baseball, in fact, fucking SUCKS
October 28, 2025 at 5:18 AM

maybe next year the redblacks won't be a complete fucking embarrassment *kicks garbage can*

mark sutcliffe serves only two constituencies: drivers and the rich fucks who line his pockets. (and yes, the venn diagram of these two groups is very nearly a circle, except that there are many drivers who are "temporarily embarrassed" rich fucks, as the saying goes)
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe responds to popular local women’s hockey team saying his plan might ruin them by linking them to the LA Dodgers

“Sutcliffe called the PWHL statements to CBC News a negotiating tactic from ‘big powerful American businesspeople … They’re the people who own the LA Dodgers’”
The poor plan for Lansdowne 2.0 could result in the Charge leaving Ottawa. #Ottnews #Ottcity www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

nazi tattoo guy, MPP for sault ste marie who got turfed from the conservatives after he (allegedly) assaulted his wife with a high chair, said conservatives tabling a bill to ban speed cameras on their first day back at work after a many-months "summer break".... we are living in an era of no shame
