People already have to meet a certain level of English in order to get visas, checking this for student visas is part of my job, and often it is GCSE standard, even for people going on to postgrad degrees. I can't see this helping with overseas HE recruitment, which often subsidises UK HE places.

The mention of the noise at the very end always chokes me up

Amazing! I read it months after a stressful situation finished, and just the dedication made me feel seen. Got a bit obsessed for a while

Happy Columbo’s Day
Screenshot from Columbo. He his talking to his dog, which is sitting is the drivers seat of a car. “Okay, I’m gonna put you in charge. You take care of the car. You’re a responsible dog. When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”

Ah yes, true. There was a quiz, done by a lab somewhere I think, that showed rats and mice without size clues and I always aced it. But then I have had both as pets and they have different faces

Till you said it I wouldn't have thought opposum, though being also in Europe that's not a go-to animal for me, I can kinda see it based on his colouration. I mean clearly he is a rat, but then I'm one of those people (as I expect you are too) who can tell rats from mice based on their faces.

We now both have colds, though Dave reckons his is on the way out. My throat is very sore and I did buy strepsils this morning, but ice cream works better. I mean everything is temporary relief at the moment.

@willdalrymple.bsky.social - this pays tribute to your grandmother’s report. Here in Suffolk, I remind people of her critical contribution to the development of youth clubs in UK. I did look into a blue plaque for her but she lived for so long, we have to wait another decade to be eligible!
Britain's youth clubs have been quietly decimated. What's most revealing is that few seem to care | John Harris
These vital spaces have been the first targets of cuts in a nation that favours age over youth – despite being the remedy for blights such as social division, polarisation and loneliness, says Guardia...

Finally showing Kid Avengers: Endgame. The shots of abandoned streets and stadiums have strong 2020 energy.

Given my food allergy, I hope not. I have enough trouble with sausages here in Britain, can't imagine Ankh-Morpork ones will do me any good

Pleased to say that I am moderating the Terry Pratchett and the Discworld panel at @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social, noon on Sunday. Been years since I've been on/moderated a panel at a con, but I'm more confident now. Also @dtdiscworld.bsky.social is now half way, through so I'm fairly well prepped.

Very interesting report (they don’t actually link to it from the press release, it’s at www.ippr.org/articles/the...)
I’ve thankfully never needed a car in Birmingham, would be great for that to apply to more people
A graph showing share of expenditure and weekly expenditure across income quintiles by whether the household owns a vehicle or not. Share hovers round 16-18% for household with vehicle, 2-6% for no vehicle; amount goes from £80 to £150 for amount from low to high income quintiles with a vehicle, £10-20 without.

Clean energy technology is quickly advancing to meet demands around the world...with a few very notable exceptions

"Solar ... is now so cheap that large markets for solar can emerge in a country in the space of a single year."

Another historic milestone for the energy transition, which is doing things seemingly daily that I was told quite often until quite recently were impossible www.bbc.com/news/article...
Renewables overtake coal as world's biggest source of electricity - BBC News
Developing countries lead the historic clean energy charge but the US and EU rely more on fossil fuels than before, a think tank study shows.

I kinda ran out of space. Was originally going to use it, but then I noticed the thing with the initials as I was typing and that felt like it has greater weight in the moment.

Never forget that the rise of the frog resistance was foretold by a great prophet, many years ago, in a more innocent time.

I was also excited to hear you'll be doing Mythago Wood next, I must get the new anthology off my tbr shelf. I have just recommended it to a colleague who's currently enjoying Piranesi.
