And I say that as a voracious reader throughout my childhood and teen years. I loved literature classes most of all but still felt like the majority of things were going over my head, and only now in my 40s am I like OHHHH, THAT’S what that meant. Huh.

A lot of the books/plays foisted upon teenagers in high school will escape their grasp until much later in life, so maybe the syllabi should include some more accessible texts to meet them where they’re at and help foster a love of lit discovery (so they don’t just straight up hate reading)

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Baraa. Baraa is the mother of 3 children Masa, 6, Ibrahim, 4 and Maha, 7 months. Tragically Maha was killed after a nearby bombing caused gasses to overwhelm her little lungs. Masa is in the hospital because of kidney issues from malnutrition.

(Also one time I seriously hurt someone—obviously by accident—during a bout I cried right there on the track and people were surprised. I’m a feeler and a gentle giant. I just wanted friends and a silly nickname and to skate fast, I wasn’t there to be a brute)

Although considering that I encountered normies who thought anyone who played roller derby must have a blood lust fueled desire to hurt others, I’m not that surprised, deep down. (Those same people probably loved watching dudes accumulate brain injuries playing football, so *shrug*)

Is it really so hard to believe that people can make community, organize, create, gather, and protest in peaceful and interesting ways without the motivation of money? I mean I’m a shut-in introvert, but even I know the power of getting together to be silly. And I used to go to protests, once!

Anyway now the Overexplanations Dept. is drawing time and a half so I have to stop here. I just think we don’t always need to pile on, especially when someone is asking for it, because they could be trying to victimize themselves to make a point OR trying to get us all participating in their kink.

But it’s also hard to take kind words at face value or let myself feel good about it when someone compliments me or does me a kindness!

Which is my problem to work out, and I also know that I don’t always act in ways that attract kind or understanding words, so I have to work at accepting that the price of social interaction sometimes means blundering and provoking people no matter how much I try to prevent it.

Sometimes I’m afraid to look at my texts, emails, and social media notifications in case there’s someone yelling at me for being an idiot/a bad friend/a complete buffoon who won’t amount to anything. I can go weeks, sometimes months without looking at these kinds of correspondence!

I understand—sort of—attention economy insomuch as most folks seem to operate believing that any attention is good attention, as long as they get eyeballs/earholes pointed in the right direction. I just couldn’t live like that.
