it's worth acknowledging that reading tarot for yourself is actually pretty hard! read my latest (and if you've been thinking about a paid subscription to my newsletter, you can also find a little discount inside):
reading tarot for yourself is hard, actually
you're not "doing it wrong" — it's just hard.

A thing we're launching at @salon.com is a weekly art-over-algorithm newsletter on culture and entertainment that isn't decoding the latest trends but rather looking closely at stuff that's (hopefully) built to last. It's called The Swell, it's free, and it starts next week. www.salon.com/newsletter

Before I head to work, a quick reminder that tomorrow is Shop Small/Small Business Saturday! Your local bookstore, record shop, art supplier, and toy shop would deeply love to see you. Plus “gotta go support my local small businesses” is a great excuse to take a break from your family.

Just got an email from some college friends of my parents. They were going through old photos with their kids visiting for the holidays and found this one of 13 year old me.

Me, dripping sweat and wearing very little after an outdoor bellydance performance, rubbing ice all over my chest and belly bc it was 90F. Extremely drunk renfest patron stumbles over, looks me up and down, leans in close and says "You are... really, *really* funny."
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

Kinda feel like this is where No Child Left Behind was headed all along
I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.

If anyone else needs some motivation to make it until fall 2026
I am smoking 17 cigarettes simultaneously while waiting for fall 2026. Not because I'm nervous about how a romcom with a covid conscious MC will be perceived. For other, different reasons.

A lovely, tender, and gently inspiring read
I had two goals for 2025: 1) Read 50 books and 2) Don’t talk about it; be about it. In my newsletter today, I wrote about what Being About It looked like for me this year, including these cold weather packs I assembled today! substack.com/home/post/p-...

is there a #dogsky ? Caroline Wheeler's Birthday Present sleeps like an angel when it's dark but as soon as it gets light she remembers she has more energy than enriched uranium but doesn't know what to do with it.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
