Lauryn Hill just shared a moving tribute to the late D’Angelo:

People need reflection.

I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no
remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making
space during a time when no similar space really existed.
You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other. It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests. Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven. I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King. A photo of Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo, wearing black

"D’Angelo also chafed at the description of his music as simply neo-soul. “I never claimed I do neo-soul,” he said in a Red Bull Music Academy interview in 2014. “When I first came out, I used to always say: ‘I do Black music. I make Black music.’”

Later today the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case to kill the voting rights act. The conservative justices will insist that racism doesn't exist in electoral politics & argue that the VRA is no longer needed to protect Black people from systemic racism in the US political system...

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

This is a 21st century Plessy v. Ferguson that will likely end America's brief attempt at multiracial democracy. This is not an exaggeration. The Black South will lose its voice in Congress and the state legislatures for a generation. I wish we had a better messaging & mobilizing around this

HIGH STAKES: The Supreme Court this week considers whether to cast another blow against the landmark Voting Rights Act in a case that could lead to fewer minorities in Congress & state legislatures.

Here's what it's all about:

Stakes are high for voting rights as Supreme Court again tackles Louisiana redistricting dispute
The conservative majority could use the case to further weaken the landmark Voting Rights Act, which was enacted to protect minority voters.

Tough on crime has always been a dog whistle for "target more state violence against the underclass." Crime has been at historic lows for over a decade but ppl still feel "unsafe" bc social media made the lives of disfavored groups (eg youth of color) more visible to "mainstream" audiences
mediumvillain.bsky.social
nobody in America wants to understand how crime actually works, thats its largely a white supremacist construction that treats poverty and/or PoC existing the same as "crime", that "law & order" and aggressive violent responses provoke aggression & violence not order, or that its fully intentional

Even though New York, Washington, Colorado, and Maryland can’t redistrict in time for 2026 — they need to be laying the groundwork to draw new maps for ‘28.

SCOTUS could give the GOP up to 19 new seats by striking down the VRA. We can’t be caught off guard. We need to be ready to cancel them out.

This is a modern Fugitive Slave Act. Federal agents going into free states raiding buildings, busting down doors, and snatching up children. Rounding up every person of color without papers and sending them god knows where. If the government can do this, you are not a free person.

It's so wild that millions of people will accept an authoritarian takeover so long as they collect a paycheck every two weeks & have stable Internet connection. COVID & capitalism completely hollowed us out. The only freedom we value is consumption & convenience. A bunch of dollar tree zombies

The thing I respect about Greta Thunberg is that she understands most people in the Western world don’t give a shit about atrocities until someone white is affected.

So she’s doing what needs to be done to keep up the pressure.

If more white folks followed that example, we’d all be fine.

The fall of Chappelle is so tragic. I'm old enough to remember when he left the country to avoid money. Now he's out here tap dancing for dirty dollars. He's just a bitter & hateful old rich man doing dated stand-up. His art used to challenge power & privilege. Now he's become it.

Ughh I hate autocorrect, it's "insidious" not "industrious" lol although the second kinda applies too bc these ideas are produced at an industrial scale
