This is the wonderful cover by @carlydraws.bsky.social for the October issue of The Deadlands @thedeadlands.com—for which I had the great pleasure of being the fiction guest editor!—with stories by Malena Salazar Maciá, Testimony Odey, Erin Ulm, Laila Amado, Jason Pearce, Kat Sedia, and Scott Payne
The cover of The Deadlands Issue 40, Fall 2025. Subtitled "a journal of ends and beginnings". Author names on the cover are Maciá, Biscotti, Odey, Ross, Ulm, Wollin, Amado, Pearce, Lemberg, Sedia, Romano, and Payne. The cover art shows a fractured red sky, maze-like with golden fissures, surrounds a golden skull at the top of a long, golden path awaiting a lone figure.

Per my Bluesky friend, it’s a process called fasciation, which the internet says is “a condition of abnormal growth in vascular plants in which the apical meristem…becomes elongated perpendicularly to the direction of growth, thus producing flattened, ribbon-like..or elaborately contorted tissue.”

When Vincent Price was in a one-man play about Oscar Wilde, Anita Bryant denounced it. When he was asked about her opinion, Price said Wilde already had a term for Bryant: A Woman of No Importance.

The weird plants are the best plants.

I didn’t know the word for it, so thanks for “fasciation.” Now I know!

Went back to visit the late season sunflowers, and while I expected the usual autumnal Eldritch horrors of this time of year, you can’t ever truly prepare for Eldritch horrors, so
A huge, bloated, misshapen sunflower with lumps ragged yellow petals. The seeds on its head are engorged like pus-filled pimples. There’s a cluster of missing seeds and it’s bleach-dead white underneath. The sunflower is so heavy despite this desiccation, so dead, but alive. There is a large black fly off-centre on its face/head.

Some people scrub their bathtubs. I eat pickles.

I generally go for dill because they're not as sweet, but I have had some very good bread and butter pickles before and would not say no to them now.

I highly recommend baby dills! You also get to feel like a giant!

Ate a bunch of pickles while waiting out my problems. The problems persist. But the pickles were nice.

All due respect to Joyce Carol Oates, check out my sister’s skeleton display 💀☠️🦴🦴
A plastic skeleton posed so that it’s clinging to a square porch pillar, appearing as if it’s climbed halfway up. Next to the skeleton, hanging from a fence, is a skeleton grim reaper in a black cape with a red clown nose. On top of the fence post behind the reaper is a laughing plastic dog skeleton. A plastic skeleton posed over some potted plants posed to that it’s dancing with its arms up. It’s smiling and also has a red clown nose. Behind it is another skeleton posed so that’s it climbing up a pillar. Beside the dancing skeleton is a plastic scorpion skeleton. A legless grim reaper skeleton hanging between the porch pillars over the front door window. It’s very high up, with its arms up. It has two black plastic bat friends on either side of it. Another skeleton clinging halfway to another pillar. This one is wearing a shiny green lizard costume (with hood with goggly eyes and tail). The skeleton’s skull is turned a full 180 degrees, sitting backward on its body to stare at the camera.

A tumblr post that reads "WHo would have believed that the perfect wikipedia photo caption could have been improved upon?" Two identical images are then side by side. The first caption is "Piper Kerr, a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904". The Caption for the image on the left reads, "Piper Kerr (right), a member of the Scottis National Antarctix Expedition, plays the bagpipes for an indifferent penguin, March 1904"
