on destroying the internet
when i talk about "destroying the internet" i guess it should be read in concert with the comparison to iconoclasm, which did not destroy images entirely, but attacked images *in specific contexts* to argue their presence there was unnecessary or harmful.

similarly, my ultimate desire would be to "destroy" the internet by changing the shape of it: a general end to ubiquitous computing, for instance, with the understanding that while connection and communication is good, yes, great, there are places where computers and the internet do not need to be, or even places where they should not ever be.

as someone who's been online for a while, i've seen the shape of the internet change a ton, and i know it's going to change again. in fact, i think the primary appeal of the internet to the capitalist class is how quickly it can be changed, how quickly it can be made to move, how many situations where access to it can be made compulsory, and how significantly your life is impacted if something happens to even one of three or four websites.

so if i say "destroy the internet" i say it with the knowledge it will certainly be destroyed, is already right now being destroyed, regardless of what we do, because profit can be extracted when they shake their ant farms and wait for us to generate more culture in the ruin.

but i think there's a utopian horizon somewhere in there, because the protean nature of the internet also means *this doesn't have to be* what the internet is, and *this doesn't have to be* how we live on it.

what anil said. also, two things are true:

1. america has a horrific, brutal facist and authoritarian tradition which has prepared for this moment;
2. that is not the only american tradition, and pretending it is helps the fascists.

Lots of folks want to have a gotcha, "did you know: America has always had corruption!" No shit. But did you know: a huge reason millions of people came to this country was because it was *better* at things like the rule of law and not being openly corrupt. For real. bsky.app/profile/anil...

sure, sure, I get that this is the "savvy" take. But no, actually, you didn't have the mayor of the largest city in the country openly bargaining away obvious crimes with the president of the United States in plain view of everyone.
