Why have I not seen this, yet? I literally only live two and a half hours from this place and I've never gone. However, I have been to one of the places a scene from Practical Magic was shot on accident! lol!
castlejskull.bsky.social
Yes - really great example. So haunting and then the entire audience realizing, due to the placement, that they're in the middle of enjoying a Nazi Anthem and then the feeling of horror... I don't know another musical or movie or story that does it so insidiously and exquisitely well.
castlejskull.bsky.social
I mean, it really is. Sitting under the hanging mining lights when they swing out over the audience was something I'll never forget.

Hey #Goodreads "reviewers" — you don't have to make a DNF "review" for a book if you didn't finish it. I STG if I see one more review for a book that only says "dnf" and nothing else. 🤦🏻‍♂️

“Vaccines contain dangerous and toxic ingredients.”
This one never dies, so let’s tackle it properly. Yes, vaccines contain multiple components but context, chemistry, and dose matter. Vaccine ingredients have been studied for decades, across trials and billions of doses. A 🧵

It started off as a concept album that did well enough to become a musical so I think it's okay to start with the music. I did and I'm now obsessed with Hadestown. I cosplayed to it the last time I went. Lol.
castlejskull.bsky.social
It should be noted that listening to the music alone without seeing the stage production does not necessarily work period I hated Wicked until I saw it live.

This is true there's no Universal monolith of taste when it comes to musicals. I honestly hate most of them but I will fight anyone who disses on Les Mis, Spirit: the Seventh Fire, Rocky Horror, Rock of Ages, Phantom, Hadestown, Hedwig, and Wicked.

Then of course, Hedwig And The Angry Inch, but ***anything*** but the Broadway version.

Hmmmm...
If you're willing to dip your toe, Hadestown is the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set against a capitalist industrial Hades but instead of pop music it's an incredible mix of jazz, blues, and folk rock Americana. The best thing to happen to the world of music and theater.

This hooked me:

And like nobody (that I saw, at least) working at the main comics publishers came out in support of her. The silence was shocking considering how vocal some creators are about their alleged LGBTQ+ support. Funny thing, though, our community doesn't forget.

I gotta say, it's a bit rich relaunching Vertigo, "Comics! They're not just for kids!", after being lily livered cowards who hurled a trans writer under the bus for making a Kirk joke.

Anyway I didn't know how to eloquently put it all together here because I just finished this the night before I wrote all this and I'm just so damn impressed and cannot wait to read more from Gretchen Felker-Martin.

• The queer/trans community/found familes and their inherent instability, fragility, and brutal vulnerability in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Moments in point:
• Robbie (le sigh...) in a heartbreaking moment when he reflects back... "Are you leaving? I don't want you to."
• Teach's sudden family backstory.
• Ramona's inner journey. I mean, jfc.

The TERF's in this book aren't saying anything different than what the ones in real life are.

The pace is nonstop, the action is detailed, specific, and gut-wrenching.

When I was 19, James Robert Baker's, 'Tim and Pete' had just come out and until now, was the only book I had ever read which really portrayed the rage a queer person can have towards the apparently socially acceptable view of not wanting us to exist and doing everything to make that a reality.
