Siren Alligators might be the most specialized human predators. These pack hunters have two distinct ways of mimicking our species.
Juveniles thrash in the water near ships, using their face-like throat markings to appear like a drowning person. The pack attacks when someone attempts a rescue.

A *huge* vaccine victory. I've been writing on this for years; Australia has seen remarkable progress in cervical cancer prevention with the HPV vaccine. I love seeing science triumph like this.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

Every prior depiction is working against the baseline of the prehistoric monster, archaic avian relic in a world of mammals, evolutionary quirks doomed to extinction. None of that here. These are real, living animals divorced from any sort of attempt to project a narrative onto them. It's beautiful.

Jester has zero brain cells CONFIRMED. I showed her that Lolo passed at the vet’s office bc *sometimes* birds mourn.
She did a 30 yard stare and started making shreddies out of the tissue Lolo was lying in. This morning, she loafed in my hand for an hour, and feels like business as usual with her.🤷‍♀️

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm thankful for Centuriavis lioae, a 10 million year old fossil relative of turkeys. It was a lot of fun describing this stunning specimen with Catherine Early, Kate Dzikiewicz, and Amy Balanoff. The fossil is named after our amazing museum colleague Suzanne Lio.

whether it's true or not doesn't change the fact that people sound like absolute cockwombles when they post OH MY GOD HE WAS TRAINED BY THE CIA???

"All Afghans who get visas are CIA" is a bullshit take. Plenty are Hazara trying not to get killed for being ethnic and religious minorities. Lumping all Afghan refugees together as CIA makes you no different in terms of discrimination than the MAGA types who think they are all terrorists.
Having intersectional minority identities in the West does not, unfortunately, confer enhanced appreciation of nuance in identities abroad. Non-Western experiences and identities are ignored or flattened. One even finds people weaponize their minority status in the West against minorities abroad.

Honestly too many Americans have no fucking clue what their military does outside of their borders and it's very annoying. Then 30 years later they go watch a movie made by one of their fellow Americans about the war crimes committed in their name. Movie wins an Oscar, everybody feels good again

The irony for me is how Musk bought Twitter with the clear intention of capturing & manipulating the press culture there — something many journalists reported on — and yet they stay there because each assumes they can’t be manipulated… while totally getting manipulated.
This is the correct take. Stewing in white supremacist propaganda is bad for your thinking. And if think you are so savvy that it won’t impact you, you are the exact kind of mark they are slowly converting (I’m looking at you, centrist pundits).
It’s really funny how a generation will roll its eyes at parents who watch Fox News but doesn’t see why being immersed in Twitter is having the same effect. Lots of serious people show up on Fox News too but that shouldn’t be your primary source on the news.
