Just repeating this to the void in case it helps anyone understand the risks better
COVID isn’t acting like the viruses most of us grew up with, and treating it like “just a cold” is putting people at real risk. David Brasure breaks down why SARS-CoV-2 is fundamentally different, how it causes long-term damage, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

It has always been their plan to build an army for domestic ideology & behavior enforcement.
The news has entirely failed to grasp the unprecedented scope of the ICE and DHS budgets. Nothing like it in modern history. A galaxy of public/private surveillance and caging institutions for $100,000,000,000s unleashed on a public that will be forever changed. www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

Conservatives fundamentally feel entitled to a world in which their preferences are normal and everybody else either desperately wants to be them or exists in terror of discovery, a world in which normal has moral force, and they feel entitled to torture and rape and kill their way to that world.

But you don't care for PDF files, do ya?

It goes like this: you click "log in"
A chatbot bubble blocks the screen
Investors thought this feature was a shoo-in
Uh-huh. I don’t doubt it

Mel Brooks was parodying a character we all know (and later Terry Pratchett parodied it even more closely) but which never existed in the source material. But everyone watching that film goes "Oh yeah, Igor the hunchbacked lab assistant, of course."

Reminder: now's a good time to clear out stuff you don't use anymore. Everybody's broke & buying stuff for the holidays. Drop good stuff to thrift stores/ buy nothing/fb marketplace BEFORE the holidays hit.

It's good for climate & just being nice to each other.

I'm clearing out old cameras today.

Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

This is just so gross.

'“We believe any deceleration of AI will cost lives,” [Andreesen] wrote on a16z’s blog. “Deaths that were preventable by the AI that was prevented from existing is a form of murder.”'

Sure Marc. I keep forgetting how brain-dead eschatological all these idiots are.

My experience, as a multiply marginalized person who cannot exist in a public space w/o being under the thumb of some type of structural oppression, is that those folks who are singly-marginalized are derailed from solidarity by their ability to conditionally escape structural oppression.

The Times adjusted it's headlines, but not until after other media started reporting the links as factual using the Times.

How comfortable should editors be with headlines that amplify the claims of an unverified claim, not subject to peer review, by a known vaccine skeptic?

More and more, generative models are looking like productivity tobacco. Promoted by biased research, it’s addictive, harmful, and the little benefit it has (nicotine is a somewhat effective ADHD drug, for example) cannot outweigh the fact that it’s hurting us all, directly and indirectly.

Between diffusion models and LLMs, tech has inflated a trillion dollar bubble around automating activities that have immense social and cultural capital—writing, art, photography—but little actual capital. It’s harmful to education, culture, and society with minimal overall benefit

We have an issue, which is anything we do, since we do a lot of contracts with governments here and around the world, we have to be very careful how anything is perceived, and also how the next DOJ is going to deal with it.

SEO makes everything meh
Omg I am such a dingbat, I went to look up news articles about foxes, to see if there were any funny examples of foxes doing things in urban environments, so I googled "Fox News", and obviously it gave me fox news, and I was like "What the hell!" then realized that no, this one's on me.

RIP Tom Stoppard.

Hardly his most important work, but I remember having my mind blown by learning he had rewritten most of the dialogue on INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, one of the funniest movies ever made
