Similar charts ranking languages by "difficulty" in function of the time needed to reach "proficiency" are regularly being shared on social media.

from a FB friend — how common is it, cross-culturally, to assign names to inanimate objects? e.g. boats, cars, favored houseplants...

I'm also curious about cross-linguistic tendencies in this type of naming... anymore know of research?

(kinda #linguistics, is there also #anthropology?)

WAR INTERPRETERS
A brilliant and poignant action thriller about the tragic fate of the Afghan war interpreters, who risked their lives for the U.S. military and were left behind in a country where they're considered traitors, and the veterans trying to fulfill the US duty.

Reposting this because I still see language-related posts floating around in the interfeedic void.

To ALL: add your posts related to your field/displine/hobby to their respective feeds so that users with the same interests can more easily find them.

Find relevant feeds on goodfeeds.co
Many disciplines/fields now have their own feeds. Feeds are to Bsky what library sections are to a library. Linguists and language nerds, use the #langsky or #linguistics tag to add your language-related posts to the dedicated "section" (= feed), instead o/t general one (where we might not see them)

Antarctic scientists showed tiny, early signs of a new accent after spending all winter in isolated groups talking to each other. Cool to see exactly how the process of language divergence starts #langsky
Linguists Hear an Accent Begin
Residents of an overwintering station in Antarctica provided linguists with evidence of the first small changes in speech that may signal the development of a new accent.

Yesterday, I approached a Moroccan lady for directions and we started chatting, being both foreigners in Germany. She had an armful of flowers she'd just cut in her garden. Out of the blue, she gave me the bouquet with such a warm, generous smile. It made my heart melt and cry a little inside.

Dostoevsky’s "mind map" draft of Brothers Karamazov, 1880. I'm old enough to remember the days before word processing, but hell...

Just a reminder that there is no one way to #write or one set of rules that will make you an "Author." Part of the hard work is figuring out what works for you

Do you have cool pics of Berlin's linguistic landscape = graffiti, ads, public signs, especially on language practices or in varieties other than (Standard) German?

Then please send them to me, we'll analyze them with my students of German Studies at Leiden Uni in our sociolinguistics class!

LUFT HANSA. Originally written separately, is composed of the words Luft (air) and Hansa (Old High German for "group"), in reference to the shipping and trading tradition of the HANSEATIC LEAGUE, a league of merchant guilds and market towns in N. and Central Europe.

Pont du Gard, France 🇫🇷

The world's highest Roman aquaduct, built in 40-60 CE.
The Pont du Gard has remained largely intact, due to the importance of its secondary function as a toll bridge. It is to this day one of the best preserved Roman aqueducts in the world.

Tip: if you're not seeing some posts in your TL or feeds or you see no reactions to yours, it may be due to your language settings. It's best to uncheck all languages (in Content AND Post languages) otherwise you might not see some posts (even if written in a language you've selected) & vice versa.

BASQUE-ICELANDIC PIDGIN

Basque whale hunters who sailed to the Icelandic Westfjords developed a unique pidgin language as a means of rudimentary communication with locals - not as you might expect a mixture between Basque and Icelandic, but between Basque and other Germanic & Romance words. 1/
