This thread has a good explanation about the changes at the US Coast Guard re hate symbols that goes over what is actually happening, what it might mean in the future
(1/9) The CG and Hate Symbols: What We Know So Far (a thread).

Yesterday, WaPo reported that the CG has removed swastikas, confederate flags, and nooses from a list of "hate symbols". This is both technically correct, and an oversimplification.

Is it good or bad parenting when you are trying to teach your child how to read...

@alicefraser.bsky.social I'm sorry for being months behind on Realms Unknown - but about Tamora Pierce's Alanna series: Alanna is 11 in the first book, and I read them first when I was 9 or 10 (in 1986-7), and they were terrific for that age.

It's always best to give food banks money - also, maybe then Loblaws doesn't get a cut
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

It’s really important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Safe bike-lanes mean business.

I spent a lot of money on ebooks yesterday and it was delightful. I've been reading this author's books from the library and I just realized I needed the rest of the series.

But now the payment service offers to track my purchase delivery, but it's an ebook. I have it. I downloaded it.

Also, the mundane world needs to get a sarcasm / black humour detector.

Sometimes I hear people talking about things like productivity and profitability - and I realize that I don't want to see a growth in either of those things. Living standards? Sure. But we don't need more productivity or profitability unless it leads to more free time and more money for workers.

Sometimes being an activist can feel defeating.

But then I remember that humpback whales were considered so endangered that an entire Star Trek movie was made about them in the 80s.

Now, because of the work of thousands, humpbacks are now a classified as a ‘species of least concern’.
