I don't know if it is possible, my initial instinct is that it shouldn't be. A lot of those funds are probably already allocated into research projects, since science moves fairly slowly. It definitely isn't good... or following appropriations law. So either illegal, or not going to happen.
altcoast.altgov.info
Not sure where the "available funds" for this are going to come from... I guess we will see if it happens.

Fun bonus - the Coast Guard is NOT included (not under DOD) and even if the rest of the military does get paid Wednesday, the CG won't.

Trump directs Pentagon to use 'available funds' to pay military during shutdown
President Trump's announcement comes days before active duty members would have missed their first full paycheck as the shutdown of the federal government continues.

Statement from NPHC and FBF:
Late in the evening of October 10th, hundreds of staff at CDC received RIF notices. Entire programs were eliminated, including those that track important health statistics, handle communications to the public, & even more leadership across the agency.
1/4 🧵
Continuing to dismantle the CDC puts American lives at risk. In the event of an emergency, America is no longer prepared to respond swiftly or effectively. Programs that keep Americans healthy, safe, and secure are being destoryed. Even if you don’t see it, public health is working in the background to protect all Americans. Public health is non-partisan, but it is being used to fight a political battle.

“Even as the government shutdown has brought financial and emotional stress to federal workers and their families, it's also given a boost to some who see the standoff in Congress as an opportunity to get the word out that things are not okay.”

We are done being afraid.

'I'm done being afraid': How the shutdown has led federal workers to speak out
After months of layoffs and funding cuts by the Trump administration, the government shutdown has given some federal employees hope that their voices are finally being heard.

This article does a fantastic job of summarizing Hegseth's many attacks on the military, and on anyone who isn't a straight white male serving. Please give it a read!

The military is smarter, more ethical, and more well-rounded with diverse SMs - all descriptors that the regime is fighting against.

All servicewomen serving in combat roles already have to meet stringent gender-neutral physical standards.

But Secretary Hegseth is intent on smearing those women as unqualified — and pushing all women out of military service.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Moves to Push Women Out of the Military
From eliminating the Pentagon’s gender advisory committee to misrepresenting women’s combat readiness, Hegseth’s record shows a clear campaign against women in uniform.

Indeed. I think theres a lot more fear now, too, that spouses speaking up will reflect poorly on the service members. So they're shutting people up before they even start, and scrutinizing those who do. SMs voices are so limited anyway, of course the spouse voices are now being lumped into that.

Note: this is NOT an EO, it is a National Security Directive. See article for the difference.

"The Trump administration isn’t only targeting organizations or groups but even individuals and “entities” whom NSPM-7 says can be identified by any of the following “indicia” (indicators) of violence:"

Meaning: expect more situations where the boats they blow up are probably fishermen, but they're going to say they're "suspected" smugglers.
altcoast.altgov.info
This is also exactly what they want to turn the military into, with all their rhetoric. They're trying to get people to join with the promise that they can do this.

The goal shouldn't be senseless violence without any attempt at discernment.

No one in the US is safe in this kind of environment.

One thing that comes through awfully clearly in these ICE videos is how many of these goons gravitated toward the job because being able to assault people with impunity is a big thrill for them.

Non-paywalled original article in the comments.

Two different issues here:

1. You shouldn't be discussing troop movements where someone can see your screen.

2. You shouldn't be considering deploying the 82nd Airborne to Portland??

Everything they do is ridiculous.

Oh look, another White House Signal scandal.

This time it was an aide to Stephen Miller who was using Signal so openly in a public space that a bystander captured images of the chat.

Oh and the messages were about sending the *82nd Airborne* into Portland.

“The idea that the President would, while the government’s shut down, push Congress out of the way and make major changes is something that goes way back to the beginning, it’s something that Madison argued, it’s exactly the opposite of what it was that the founders had in mind.”

@eff.org is my go-to for good information on internet safety and controlling the data you're putting out. In this digital world I think we will be seeing a lot more of this online surveillance. To fight back, we need to be knowledgeable and keep one step ahead.

"This is how authoritarian power consolidates itself — by quietly monitoring every reaction, every hesitation, every private doubt, and turning it into a scorecard of allegiance."

This appears to be unconfirmed, but if it's true, which isn't farfetched, it's "thought police" level horrifying.

As if irony isn’t already dead, the Hatch Act violation on the DOJ website, which blames Democrats for the shutdown, appears on the page advising DOJ employees they are subject to the Hatch Act. joycevance.substack.com/p/a-note-abo...

Gregory Bovino, a U.S. Border Patrol commander-at-large, claimed that gang Tren de Aragua was operating inside the five-story apartment building[...] around 30 migrants were taken into custody.

Bovino also stated that "he is neither a “Nazi” nor is he in the “Gestapo.”"

What an odd thing to say...

You're welcome to tag me in it! I can't promise I'll share it out, but I'm happy to take a look.

Seems like an appropriate time to remind everyone that, in particular, lower enlisted military members are not paid enough, and often live paycheck to paycheck.

They're more likely than civilians to be in single-earner households, and they have to keep working during a shutdown.
geth1138.bsky.social
Important to note that not everyone who stopped getting paid today can head home. They just have to continue to work with no money for transportation to get there. Or you know. Food.

This thread is important!

The CG has had its share of sexual assault, harassment, & discrimination cases swept under the rug. Accountability has been slow to come, & though things are better than before, they're still not great.

This is a massive step backward in handling offenders in uniform.
silvermansecurity.bsky.social
This bit, & the one in the next reskeet, need to be fully unpacked. What Hegseth is asserting here is that the zero defect concept, which plays an important role in an up or out military, is going away as long as he's SecDef. 1/

Hegseth: "You should not pay for an earnest mistake for your entire career. That's why today, at my direction, we're making changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records."

(3/3) Hopefully this shutdown ends before this information is needed, but wanted to push it out early anyway.

Shutdowns are hard, but we can get through this together. If you're in need of resources and don't know how to access them, please feel free to message me and I can try to help.
altcoast.altgov.info
(2/3) Utilize local food pantries & other support services. They're there for anyone in need.

Reach out to your local Ombudsman if you're not sure what resources are available, they're happy to help.

You can also ask most utilities, CCs, etc, for an extended due date. They want to work with you!
