Iconic transgender activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy - who dedicated her life to fiercely protecting, loving, and mentoring trans people of color, those with HIV/AIDS, and her incarcerated ‘gurls’  - became an ancestor yesterday. We shall carry her torch onward. Thank you, mama.

I was the chief author who passed the conversion therapy ban in MN and while doing that, I met many people who experienced the so-called therapy. And I need to be clear, conversion therapy is TORTURE. It is ineffectual torture that we sanction for children. And it's WRONG.

“It’s intellectually honest and deeply moving to see conservative voices saying, ‘This isn’t therapy. This isn’t faith. This is abuse.’ I hope the Court listens.” - NCLR Legal Director @shannonminter5.bsky.social

This Tuesday, SCOTUS will hear Chiles v. Salazar - a landmark case on conversion therapy.

There have been a lot of myths circling around about what conversion therapy is. Scroll to get the facts!
Myth vs. Fact: Conversion Therapy
nclrights.bsky.social
"However, in my view, ending the practice of conversion therapy is simply the right thing to do — and my stance on this issue is rooted in my Christian values, as well as my personal family experiences."

Conversion therapy does not protect, it harms.
Myth: Conversion therapy protects young people from a dangerous future.

Fact: Research shows that youth who are subject to conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.
nclrights.bsky.social
Conversion therapy makes people feel isolated and unaccepted. Often, people who are subject to conversion practices are pushed away from their places of worship.
Myth: Conversion therapy aligns with values of faith.

Fact: Research shows that youth who experience conversion “therapy” are likely to feel shame, confusion, and disconnection from their faith communities. Many religious groups continue to express support for ending these dangerous practices.
nclrights.bsky.social
Just because there is a ban on conversion therapy DOESN'T mean that a therapist is going to push someone toward being LGBTQ. These bans DO prevent dangerous, discredited practices.
Myth: When there is a ban on conversion therapy, therapists are more likely to push someone toward being LGBTQ.

Fact: Therapists can’t ethically pressure young people toward a specific outcome. Conversion therapy relies on a false promise that a person's gender or sexuality can be changed if they just work hard enough, and create an environment where only one outcome is acceptable.
