Took us two years and some, but we did it. 🎉

Lesson learned: don't shadow drop your game and hope for the best.

(even if it's a very low budget remake of your first game and you don't have the money to both market it properly and fund on your next title).

The PS2 truly is the best console ever because it is constantly becoming more powerful. Each time we say something "looks like a PS2 game" we're talking about a game of a higher fidelity than the last. What the PS2 is capable of in 2025 is so far beyond what it was capable of in 2003. if you really wanna make an indie's day buy their game on itch and leave a big fat tip
I'll also add that, where possible for your financial scenario, buying indie games as close to full price as possible is a biggie. Steam takes 30% of every copy. Then the publisher takes theirs. (And even if there's no publisher the dev needs to recoup costs.)

Try not to leave creators with pennies
wishlist conversion rates REALLY fucking fall into the gutter if people just wishlist for the sake of it and don't eventually adopt / pick up the game

Seriously, if the art is strong, some color variation simply doesn't matter that much. The average person will never notice anyway and only you the artist know it didn't match exactly what you intended.
Listen to me. Listen. If you're making images that will only be displayed on screens, YOU HAVE TO LET GO. You can calibrate your screens perfectly, but then 25k people will see it on their shitty $50 monitors or cracked phone and its out of your hands. Don't think of it. Achieve enlightenment.

Again, full price isn't going to fit everyone's wallet! But players are so conditioned these days to wait for fire sales on games, and many indies can't sustain that. Selling a ton of copies during a Steam sale doesn't actually move the needle if 90% off means the dev winds up with a few quarters.

Ouch but.... Not false. We need people to drop the excel sheets and get in early, get in and take risk instead of just being fucking middlemen. If you're taking revenue % - fucking earn it.
Look, it’s really straightforward to get a publisher as a new name indie in 2025. Simply do 95% of the work making and marketing your game, and if your metrics are trending towards almost certain success, a publisher will swoop in to promise the remaining 5%, deliver 3%, and collect 75%
