Chicago. Parent. Fat. Bisexual. Bipolar II. Loud. Still masking. Kind of cute if you squint. Nerdy, but in a way that's fairly socially acceptable now. I have a kid, Nikole, who is she/they and a spouse, N, who is he/him. Avatar by @rally.luckyraven.cc

If you post queerphobic bullshit like "Elonia Musk" or two male politicians kissing or whatever then I'm blocking you.

You don't need to make "ewww gaaayyy" jokes about these dipshits. You can simply point to the actual harm they are actively doing. You don't need to make gay jokes period, in fact.

Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

A bunch of rowdy jocks tossed a nerd out of a window as a lark.

Holden's room mate keeps "borrowing" his stuff and Holden is afraid to object too much because he doesn't want to be thrown out of a window and also because he wants to be liked.

I know, I know.

You wanted to run off to a cabin in the woods with him. ;)

I really, really think the reason so many people hate Catcher is that they were taught it poorly and miss major themes in the book.

It's easy to boil it down to "he's a whiny little rich boy" and miss meaty veins of trauma running through the kid.
brigid.bsky.social
That sprang out at me the first time I read the book to the point I don't understand how people miss it.

My half remembered read on Holden is that he has been through shit, basically everyone with power in his life has comprehensively failed him, and he just wants to find a lifeline and has no idea how to even say that

I really love the idea of an automat; current vending machines just aren't the same.

Nice - can't wait to see!
brigid.bsky.social
Yeah, I know it's a different book ;) . The idea of running away is such an enticing one.

And despite being raised by an overt homophobe he still sucks dick and is secure in that dick sucking! he has orgies that include men!

That is not erased by falling in love with a woman, jfc!

His dad's like "you're a pathetic cock sucker!" and he's like "what's wrong with sucking cock? weird insult!"

He's absolutely one of those "he's a terrible person because that's all he knows" people. "What do you mean women don't like to be called sweet tits? It's a compliment!"

This book is the same age as my parents. It's older than my Mother in Law. It was read by people a generation before them.

Old Books aren't innately bad but we don't need to cling to them.

CitR was published in 1951 and part of Holden's trauma is his big brother surviving the horrors of serving overseas in WWII and responding by leaving Holden to move from NY to CA to write for Hollywood instead of emotional personal short stories and what not. He's "selling out" and being Fakey.

The two big issues with "Catcher in the Rye" is that teachers largely aren't teaching it correctly - major themes and events just aren't brought up - and also there's more recent books covering the same themes that are more accessible.

He is isolated, with no family and no friends to rely on. He is traumatized on several levels by several different events. He desperately wants connection, wants friendship, wants love. He has terrible social skills.

And he is, again, a kid. He's just a kid.

I'd whine too.

with no repercussions could do exactly the same thing to him.

He is very obviously wildly unwell and his parents respond by shuffling him from boarding school to boarding school (much as the Kennedys did with RFK Jr.), separating him from his only remaining (and beloved) sibling.

Holden Caulfield is a privileged dick who, among other things, sexually assaults a female friend of his.

He's also been sexually abused by at least one teacher.

He's mourning the recent death of one brother & the absence of another and is very aware that classmates who murdered an unpopular kid...

A guy so bisexual he essentially treats it as the default despite having one of the most bigoted fathers in existence is a bisexual guy. You don't STOP being bisexual. "Oh he was secretly straight all along" no he is always bisexual. People are EXHAUSTING.

His queerness is part of what makes his relationship with Adebayo so special. Queer folks often have to build found families, and the 11th Street Kids are just that.

Hey friends, it's not queerbaiting if Chris, aka Peacemaker, a bisexual, has feelings for a woman. It's not schroedinger's queerness. He's still queer even if he's in a het relationship. Of all the complaints I've seen about S2, this one makes me the angriest.
