If I had explain American history in one sentence, I could do worse than "John Brown was hung for treason, but Robert E. Lee was not."
John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry began on this day in 1859.

Again, nothing makes these ppl more miserable than a bunch of normies laying bare what cowards and frauds they are. This person is absolutely seething bc the extent of his political action is "be a viscerially unpleasent shitposter online" and anything that shows how hollow that is must be attacked.
Where’s the @swolecialism.bsky.social post about the most unpleasant person ever

Joking in your Young Republican group chat about the mass murder of 6 million people who'd been scapegoated for decades as morally degenerate ethnic/religious outsiders is just locker room talk. Speaking lightly of the murder of Charlie Kirk to your 400 friends on Facebook is a fireable offense.
People act like Trump somehow extinguished the Leslie Knope spirit in normie lib folks but it just isn't true (or likely possible)
This seems like one of the most undervalued responses to all this. Severe 1987-brain to pretend that the effect of something is solely in the moment it transpired

‼️ this is one of the reasons why the Musk shutdown of USAID broke me, like

Congress said 'we're allocating these funds to save lives'

a random asshole with too much money and unresolved bitterness about the end of Apartheid said 'no you're not'

so the funding disappeared??

and people are dying??
There's literally no reason for Congress to exist if any random freak in the presidential orbit can nullify laws and seize federal funds. All of this is plainly illegal, but Mike Johnson leads the most corrupt Congress in US history (and by a wide margin.)

you know I could have sworn that like ten years ago they pretended this happened against them (it didn’t) and said it was the worst offense that had ever happened (again it didn’t).

Demagogic president seizes money to pay standing army, arrogating to himself legislative power, while his cronies keep Congress out of session is honestly more or less exactly how the Founders thought this would end

there’s a subset of people who, if you point out something bad happening now, will basically reply “it was always like this and anyone who disagrees is just privileged.” it parades as savvy but nine times out of ten it’s just an ahistorical oversimplification.
"they've always been like this" is always a tempting savvy take but it is just not true that Republican staffers were 100 percent open Nazis back in 2004, or hell even 2014. they just weren't
there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

it is ALWAYS worth pointing out who gets to be just a helpless little innocent precious baby boy at the age of 34, vs. who is framed by the cops as a big scary dangerous man whose candy bar might be a gun when he's barely in middle school, or described as a "13-year-old woman" by her predator
last i checked these young republicans were like 25 years old. but this is a classic case of infantilization to diminish the significance of the offense. www.yahoo.com/news/article...

Strong concur, it's way too coincidental that fascism is on the rise just as the last generation that saw it slips into becoming a historical past
Trump thinks the criminal justice system should treat 14 year old black kids as adults
Mainstream-ish, yeah. But now it's *the* issue (at least the racism underlying it). I think this stuff was always there in some capacity, but not for the normal type folks who have been huffing weapons grade awfulness on Facebook (and now tiktok) for the past 20 years.
Yeah, but the Tom Tancredo's of that day were generally considered fringe members of the party

This place is a completely deranged social environment that’s flash-frying the brains of people who want to be popular here, and is only defensible in comparison to its much-larger competitor, which is doing exactly the same thing but with considerably more Hitler
Yeah, pretty bad, but W did at least nominally run on "compassionate conservatism", whatever the hell that means. PEPFAR made me believe he at least had one or two good bones inside him (doubtful it was >3). I take most of your point here
