Hi everyone!
I'm a planning professor at the University of Waterloo, researching housing, transportation & how they relate to each other.
I'm moving from Twitter & I'll post more here soon.
Here are links to some stuff I've written:

Cosy bar plus a view of a streetcar for the win!

We had one of the main sources of housing supply based on treating it like a speculative commodity.

Are we really that surprised when it goes bust?

The Toronto condo isn't dead — but it's going to be different
Condos made investors rich — until suddenly they didn’t. As the crash claims ‘tens of billions’ in losses, this is what's coming next.

That's right, folks, the Ontario government's Black Friday sale is back! And for this Black Friday, for a small donation to my reelection campaign, you'll receive a $10M Skills Development Fund grant! But hurry, because the OPP are having a look-see now, so this is a time-limited offer!

Georgian Trail in the snow?

Really enjoyed this episode on Tropicana Field!
And I appreciated the discussion about fans with Yankee jerseys with names on the back as the team has never done this.
Great episode and great insights into this unique and much maligned stadium.

It was great evening in Fort Erie yesterday for our film screening. A very engaged and passionate audience and a fantastic Q&A.
Everywhere I've taken the film we've had great discussions, but only in Fort Erie did I come away with new socks!
Thank to Edward Terry, Breanna Antonio & the team!

We've got a number of screenings lined up for the next few months & many more in development. It's really exciting and I'm really honoured to say that the next Toronto screening will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity on 11 January, 1:30pm. More info here:

Agree!
The supply we need is deeply affordable rental. Whatever that takes, that’s where our energy should be.

Great night for photography!

I stayed over in downtown Toronto last night so of course I went for a walk and took some pictures of streetcars!

Just in time for today's Toronto premiere of my housing film, I wrote this piece in The Star. It gives a good overview of the main messages and insights from the documentary.

The market alone isn’t going to fix the housing crisis. These Canadian towns are showing us how it’s done
We need a variety of approaches to our inescapable housing problem.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Build it and they will come!
Or phrased another way:
Run even a basic and limited weekend train service and they will ride!
Around 400 people boarded the first regular weekend GO Train from Kitchener to Toronto Sunday morning.
More trains please!

Kitchener sees hundreds ride first weekend GO train to Toronto
With Metrolinx’s latest service expansion, the amenities of Canada’s biggest city are now a one-hour and 45-minute train ride away for a return fare of $10.

I’ve never used Facebook and don’t feel I missed much!

It was a unique cookie cutter stadium!
What's left of the original RFK Stadium in DC.

Provide more transit and people will come!
Induced demand also works for trains!
New journeys, trips and adventures are created when new weekend trains are introduced.
More of this please!
Wow, big crowd out here in Guelph for the first weekend train. Lots of happy commuters and families going to Toronto for the day.

Thanks to everyone who pushed to convince Metrolinx that there is demand for weekend service.

I’ve got tickets to several Sceptres games this season and can’t wait. Looking forward to watching great hockey with a great vibe.

This wouldn’t be much of an issue in most other cities around the world with legacy streetcar/tram lines that now feature dedicated rights of way and priority signalling.
Brussels and Rotterdam spring to mind.
But since Toronto has virtually none of these, this must be a painfully slow ride.
The 506 Carlton streetcar is currently doing this ridiculous routing where it diverts to Dundas Street twice over a short distance due to two separate construction projects.

What’s the point of that short jog up Bay and back down Church?

A great week of curling ahead!
What a fantastic evening crowd here in Halifax

5,593 fans here at Scotiabank Centre tonight to watch the opening men’s draw at the Olympic Curling Trials.

And being treated to some fine rock-throwing so far. Outstanding.

In today’s least surprising local news, speed display signs aren’t enough to make our roads safer.

Halifax has installed nearly 50 speed display signs around the municipality, but on average they only slow down drivers by less than one km/h, according to a new staff report.

Massive shoutout out to whoever handles the Royal Canadian Air Force’s social media account. They responded to every single comment on their already very solid Trans Day of Remembrance post and they responded like this…

What an amazing evening at the resurgent KW Symphony! Such a special event and great to be back at Centre in the Square. Looking forward to many more concerts this season! Thanks to everyone who made this possible.
