Perfect Tom Stoppard story from DTel obituary:

His response to a letter from Harold Pinter canvassing support for a proposal to have the Comedy Theatre in London rechristened the Pinter Theatre, “Have you thought, instead, of changing your name to Harold Comedy?”

Just finished The Secret History read by Donna Tartt. Hadn’t re-read since buying it in paperback at Waterstones Deansgate when it came out. Loved it then.

My goodness it’s still great. And Donna Tartt reads it so brilliantly. You’d think she was a professional actor.

Today was a good day, albeit a touch nippy. Off Skervoy, Arctic Norway. It’ll take me a while to process this one.

I was today years old when I realised that this is “Penry” the mild-mannered janitor.

Shocked.

And now questioning everything.

Re-reading - DeLillo hits some kind of high pitch of perfection in the first fifty pages of this.

But he could write about anything.

Look at how deep he goes in this description of the day you go to the supermarket and they’ve re-arranged the shelves.

Mark Lamarr once said on his radio programme with Jo Brand that he’d just realised that at 36 (ish) he had probably eaten half the bananas he would eat in his lifetime. Often think about this. Especially as I am now in my 50s. I really better get around to reading The Brothers Karamazov.

Going to the bookshop annual party this week, and they’ve asked everyone to come as book cover or in a costume inspired by a book. I’m not really a dress up person, so I’m going lowkey with a prop to make a favourite book cover. Can you guess what it is?

Those who know me IRL probably know that I'm bit obsessed with this bit of the moor where the vast forestry plantation of Fernworthy rubs up against Dartmoor proper.

It's a weird place of often unsettling contrasts, but that perimeter wall is also a reassuring handrail when the weather turns sour.
