There’s more to life than books you know…
Memorial Device ANT

First Sunday of Advent. Counting my blessings.

These not-so-little-guys at lunch in rainy Manchester yesterday, are top of the list. ❤️🙏.

Just back from there now. A tad busy. But was great to see the kids. Changed a bit since I lived there.

Just finished The Secret History read by Donna Tartt. Hadn’t re-read since buying it in paperback at Waterstones Deansgate when it came out. Loved it then.

My goodness it’s still great. And Donna Tartt reads it so brilliantly. You’d think she was a professional actor.

(See also True Grit.)

I was today years old when I realised that this is “Penry” the mild-mannered janitor.

Shocked.

And now questioning everything.

Love it when the kids are home from university. ❤️❤️

Started seeing that lemon poster everywhere and wondered - who are this band? Then I heard Terry Christian play “I Am The Resurrection” on Piccadilly Radio Key 103. Mind blown. RIP Mani.

Rib-eye steak. Baked potato with all the steakhouse trimmings (Niles and Frasier would not approve).

Intrigued by the turnip cake.

Re-reading - DeLillo hits some kind of high pitch of perfection in the first fifty pages of this.

But he could write about anything.

Look at how deep he goes in this description of the day you go to the supermarket and they’ve re-arranged the shelves.

Mark Lamarr once said on his radio programme with Jo Brand that he’d just realised that at 36 (ish) he had probably eaten half the bananas he would eat in his lifetime. Often think about this. Especially as I am now in my 50s. I really better get around to reading The Brothers Karamazov.

This sounds about right.

A forgettable team wins the league and everyone forgets it.

Spiced hot chocolate. Here’s a lovely poem by Anne Sexton.

Here you go. I feel his eyes on me as I enter the crucial stages of this dinner.

Henri Quatre wanted every Frenchman to have a poule au pot each week. This is my first attempt at a pot roasted chicken.

More news as we have it.

Ulysses.

That boy Tennyson could write a poem.

It really was. And what a tonic that game was. Pure joy there at the end.

Loved watching Steve Clarke with his players. Top-drawer happy Dad energy.

Also, who wouldn’t want to be Scott?

I’m a teacher. So not money.

My family are Irish.

My parents came to London from Sligo in 1968 during a strike at the Arigna mine in Sligo.

I went to Cornwall on holiday with a mate in 85 and just love the countryside.

My Dad’s in this march somewhere.

Absolutely the same!

In the same order.

I LOVE King of Comedy so much.

This is FANTASTIC.

Just saying.

First thought - a caltrop, for throwing under horses to turn their ankle. It’s a bit too pretty for that though I suppose. Here’s one from the First World War.

Slow cooked garlicky pork shoulder with five spice, noodles and greens. Plenty of soy.

Likky is still with us, heavens be praised. Now we need to leave her alone.

OK - maybe the greatest “punch the air moment” in all of music for me. Saw Arthur Lee in 2005 in Birmingham with a fantastic young starry eyed backing band. When the mariachi trumpet comes in on Alone Again Or at 1 min 47s. Bliss.
