Terrific piece this. Continue to find it bizarre how little “food inflation is off the chain” and “core inflation is above target” featured as topics at Labour conference or more broadly as “theories to why the government is unpopular”.

“I think politicians are ignoring prices and bills and hoping we’ll forget about them and find something else to complain about…”

My report on how the flighty Westminster bubble forgot about the cost-of-living crisis, which certainly isn't over:
Energy bills rise while Westminster talks immigration
Why have our politicians forgotten about the cost-of-living crisis?

Headlines going to the English requirements but I'd completely missed this part of the plans, yet another act of idiotic self harm. Completely incompatible with the government's stated aims on housebuilding, growth, etc.
The immigration skills charge is being raised by 32%

An example of the government not having a project: only yesterday the government was trumpeting new measures to make it easier to build things. We'll work out who actually builds stuff later on.

Yeah to be clear I know, but it is just that it is a necessity to addend because there'll always be resistance to occupation or apartheid and the missing link to realizing the end of it is not Arab acceptance of Israel (already happened) but Western acceptance of the political question of Palestine.

But they are very useful! For example they demonstrate that is no longer true to say that Reform's support is FPTP-inefficient or that Conservative decline is benefiting Labour. They show that losing support to the left is hurting Labour in urban seats. These are very useful things to know!

Make no mistake. Those who spearheaded the Gaza genocide will try to relaunch it in a more ruthless manner, at the earliest opportunity.
They will fail only if there will be an alternative vision, one of recognition, life and equality for everyone.

feels quite Guardian that this piece doesn't present the move as good news or even neutral news but instead spends about two thirds of its copy running through every single possible reason why a maybe fun thing will be TERRIBLE and AWFUL www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Look it might not be better for the productivity numbers but going from Paris cafes being open until 2am as standard back to pubs which close at 11 or 12 was a major downgrade so I'm all for it

I've been trying to switch it up because during ea I got stuck in a pattern of just doing medea skull + blitz + storm ring (when it was bugged) and it did make it feel a bit too easy.
bojs.bsky.social
yes but it can work without leaning on blitz which I feel counts for something!

One of the best things about one battle after another is that it correctly identifies the cult of the operator as key to the modern fascist right and then relentlessly makes it look insecure and ridiculous

This is one of the issues London Labour insiders raised with me in this piece on Labour & London – Labour is taking the votes of the capital for granted, and is about to impose major local government austerity on councils who were hard hit first time round.

Amazed this is still going ahead - basic and obvious problem is that essentially everything local government does now is for the poor. You can’t move it around without really hurting poor people somewhere!

The 10 year wait for Indefinite Leave to Remain will make the UK very unattractive for high skilled workers who often have alternatives. 2019 data (excluding the NHS and universities) shows that high skilled workers on visas are heavily concentrated in multinationals who can move jobs abroad (5/x)

One reason Labour leaves me confused: buff.ly/c7m4CGZ
But note too that, broadly speaking, Labour is united on economic issues and divided on cultural issues. While Reform - and the right overall all the more so - is divided on economic issues while united on cultural issues. Which makes the enthusiasm of some Labour strategists to make politics about cultural issues… puzzling.

I'm getting really really fed up at constant reassertion that welfare spending is "out of control" when it is the same as the average for the past few decades.

One reason disability benefit costs have risen is because core support has fallen.

Our hearts are with the victims and their families at this terrible time.
We are heartbroken to emerge from Yom Kippur into news of the attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester. No one should face violence for attending synagogue services and our hearts are with the victims and their families at this terrible time.
For many in our community, this news may only just be reaching you after a day spent in prayer, reflection, and fasting. To be confronted with such awfulness in this moment is particularly painful: please know that you are not alone. In moments like this, it is vital that our communities - Jewish and non-Jewish alike hold one another close. Our safety and liberation depend on solidarity between all those who are marginalised and targeted, and we must not allow those who seek to divide us to succeed. Every person deserves to live, gather, and worship in safety and dignity. We condemn this act of violence unequivocally, and restate our commitment to building a world where this kind of horror is no longer possible.

The idea that being a refugee is somehow a “golden ticket” is genuinely awful. These are people who the government have recognised are in need of protection. Do they think people chose that? That that’s what people wanted?
