The movie is no longer remembered fondly for a million acceptable reasons, but "American Beauty" on opening weekend in LA. The audience was in the palm of the movie's hand from end to end. There were cheers and even standing ovations *during the film*.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

@tomewing.bsky.social I'm catching up on 2025 releases and can't decide if this is that rarest of creatures: a baggy Big Thief song. What is the verdict? www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ypv...

Lots of hate for the guy who made us all take our shoes off at the airport but not the people who made it so we need 2-factor identification for literally everything.

I watch all sorts of gory and revolting horror movies just fine but I can’t watch the way people brush their teeth in movies, it grosses me out.

The internet's been a big part of music for 30 years but it's still odd to me when some of the "best" albums of the year have ZERO presence in the physical world, nothing you can hold, no radio play, you never hear them in the wild, they only exist on phones and laptops.

It happened to me: I Shazamed a Pearl Jam song I didn’t know and it was Silverchair.

Doris Troy: “Just One Look.” Sometimes you catch the song in the wild and think there’s never been a better pop song.

I love Trey but only a millionaire rock star would think “who wants to reminisce about the good times of 2020? Spatchcock!” Hard pass from me.
i don’t think i’ve properly started grieving the last five years until i hit play on last night’s Beacon show

Publications: We need to create more lists. This is what drives the most traffic to our sites.
Readers: Can you make the lists functional on mobile devices? That's what we all read your sites on.
Publications: No.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

The most streamed Bill Callahan song by far is "Jim Cain", the first song on "Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle". Is it because the song is beautiful or people wanted to try him out and said "nope, not for me" after one song?

Listening to Jagged Little Pill in full for the first time in 25+ years and realizing I actually love this album. A singles-heavy album where the whole actually is greater than the sum of the parts.

Seeing “Mama’s Gun” in full was part roller coaster, part religious experience, and I’ll never emotionally recover from seeing the Orange Moon, Bag Lady, Time’s A Wastin’ trio live.

I'm grateful for a life in which books continue to change me at age 50, but adolescence:

Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," an alternative way of writing, of reading, of living. I've since read it two more times at different ages and it's given me something different each time.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

I just had a wild experience for 2025: was next to two Boomers hearing the Lemonheads version of Mrs. Robinson for the first time and they were furious.
