New - Europe’s 3-body problem: collapsing global order sparks hunt for new trajectory

I got to write about one of my favourite Chinese sci-fi novels. Europe, realising it can’t fix systemic chaos, is instead trying to shift its own orbit.
Europe’s 3-body problem: collapsing global order sparks hunt for new trajectory
Some are sceptical the EU’s talk of ‘economic security’ can translate into action, but there are early signs that may be changing.

🤔Here’s Viktor Orbán bowing to Ilham Aliyev in Egypt. Their close ties date back to 2012 when Orbán sent home Ramil Safarov, who murdered an Armenian officer with an axe, to Azerbaijan—where Safarov got a hero’s welcome. Meanwhile, $7 million was wired from an Azeri fund to a Hungarian bank.

working on a feature on a similar character at the moment and the advance TL;DR is that these guys are pretty good at making themselves feel unavoidable and intellectually overwhelming, when their reactionary views are very often just incredibly pedestrian and unoriginal, it's their main strength

Reading Thiel, Yarvin, Peterson et al. makes you realise what passes for intellectual iconoclasm these days is all absolute bollocks. Why anyone gives any of these people the time of day let alone credibility is baffling.

Signal of the kind of "rights" Palestinians will enjoy in the post-genocide

Israel has banned Palestinians from celebrating the release of Palestinian prisoners [hostages] & banned their families from giving interviews

Contrast that with the celebrations around the release of Israeli hostages & the many interviews being broadcast around the world.

When Putin talks to a Russians he consistently says that they invade Ukraine to destroy the state and nation and correct the path of history. NATO and similar framings are just for the useful foreigners.

Pu spells out Ru's imperialist motivations for the war. He calls the conquest a long-held dream and historical destiny.

He beclowns those who insist NATO expansion caused the war. Let's see if anyone from the Mearsheimer fan club admits the claim has been falsified.

They didn’t just NOT give Trump the Nobel Peace Prize, they wrote a citation that reads like an anti-Trump rallying cry.

(He’s gonna extra-tariff Norway now, isn’t he?)

'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said as it announced Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Taken together, I am seeing a French political class which is not only uploading its internal political crisis to the EU level, but also transposing its anger at Macron to an anger at the EU level pro-European centre.

Not a good combination.

Foreigner: How is your family?
Polish person: Glad you asked, my parents are divorcing, my sister hates me, my brother is dying of cancer, and my aunt was just jailed for posting death threats to gay people on Facebook.
Foreigner: Jesus Christ, why
Polish person: You're welcome, now shut up.

"Antifa has been around in various iterations for almost 100 years in some instances, going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany."

Israel's genocidal war on Gaza - two years of hell on earth for Palestinians - could have ended at any time with pressure from the US president. There is no safe and peaceful future without justice, without accountability, without freedom for Palestinians

hundred-year-old olive trees have been cut down (some 500 in the past five months) and Palestinians are being squeezed into living in ever smaller areas, surrounded on all sides by Israeli settlements, choked and unable to develop beyond the land allocated to them, living as in ghettoes."

It was published in 2007, but my copy has a 2023 epilogue (highlighting the worsening of the situation of Palestinian freedom of movement in the West Bank): "It's a strange experience to live in a place that is constantly vanishing. The hills, wadis and escarpments have been given Hebrew names,

📖- Following on the subject, read a great book by Raja Shehadeh: Palestinian Walks Notes on a Vanishing Landscapes. The author recounts his different sarhat (wandering) through the hills of Palestine, mediating on his family history & reflecting on the political situation of his country.

Despite the harrowing scenes, the film is above all a love story, supported by extraordinary actors: love for one's people and one's family.
Highly recommend, especially as we can see it on continental Europe, but it is not distributed everywhere, as explained here by the director Cherien Dabis

From the grandfather being kicked from their home during the 1948 Nakba to the grandson being hit by a bullet in the first Intifada of 1988. You really feel for the characters and are angry with them during the humiliating checkpoint scene, the land-stealing, the 2nd generation's visit to Jaffa.

🎬&📖 🧵- Continuing to catch-up on Palestinian stories and narratives that I've been ignorant about all this time: went to see the extraordinary movie "All That's Left of You", followed by a Q&A with its director Cherien Dabis. The movie tells the story of a Palestinian family on three generations

An extremely proud day for Hungarians. I just really hope Orbán’s proxies won’t launch a smear campaign, since Krasznahorkai is an outspoken critic of contemporary fascism, far-right politics, and Viktor Orbán himself.

I took this picture of Olga and László in London in 2018. Congrats to Krasznahorkai and his translators, including George Szirtes and @ottiliemulzet.bsky.social, and long live a Central Europe free of dictators (foreign and domestic) and full of magnificent minds like these!
